Im sick of bodegas high prices..Almost everything is now overpriced...things that cost 1 dollar now cost 2.50 im sick of it..Now I just make the 4 block trek to the supermarket.

Yeah it used to be that you could get stuff cheaper in a bodega, but outside of beer and a few things here and there, you can get pretty much everything cheaper at a supermarket or even some of the bigger chain pharmacies.

Unfortunately, this has become true in alot of cases.

The reason being is that bodegas don't sell wholesale. Supermarkets can do that. What a bodega does is sell minute products (candy, newspapers, potato chips, condoms, etc.). The bodegas that you're talking about were never really meant to compete w/ the major chain supermarkets (which tends to offer certain products, sometimes wholesale, at a different format), neither were they meant to compete w/ pharmacies, green grocers, and convenience stores. They're basically corner stores.
In other words, bodegas, depending on the area, can specialize on minute products, or in neighborhoods w/ Latino majorities, Spanish products. That's why many bodegas are in places like Harlem, Washington Heights, the Bronx, and Brooklyn, because it caters to a specific market as opposed to 7-11 (convenience store) or a Rite Aid (pharmacy). If I'm going to get some drugs or get some toiletries, then I'm going to be headed to Walgreens or Duane Reade, but the current market dictates the economy, and some families might not be able to buy wholesale, so then they go to the bodega and buy maybe a couple bars of soap, or a half a gallon of milk, rather than a whole gallon.
It is what it is!!!! If you go to any neighborhood, you'll see an independent corner store, whether it's owned by Arabs, Indians, Italians, or the Chinese, you're going to need corner stores to compete w/ the big boys. And some of those corner stores specialize in ethnic foods, which the big boys don't do, since it's not part of the general demand in America.
Will they then have to report all of their income and charge the same prices for everyone? If they're looking for fairness they should really do away with the one-armed-bandit "how much is this item TODAY" type pricing they currently have in place

NY Bodegas in the '60s were the place to go if you needed to buy in the middle of the night. There were no other stores open the hours Bodegas were, and most bigger stores were closed on Sundays. Here is where these owners made money. You knew their families and they knew you and your family. Respect and honesty were a big deal and some bodegas let you put your groceries on "tab", and let you pay on payday. Big stores didn't do that!!! Come on people think back and see how far we've come. Bodegas should invest in their stores and the neighborhoods should utilize their Bodegas. Their are plenty ideas out there to keep Bodegas Strong in the community. Destrella.
