I agree. The people who programmed the software to include Newark Airport when someone asks for flights leaving from/arriving at a New York airport probably do not live in NY.

Not at all the case. In fact, Newark is closer to parts of New York than JFK. As an example, Lower Manhattan is about 6 miles closer to Newark than JFK. And, it's the region's third major airport, which is not determined by the state in which the airport is located, rather by the market that said airport serves.

I know that. But for New Yorkers who are not Manhattan (or Staten Island) residents, it is generally out of the way compared to the two real NYC airports, and should be an optional choice rather than automatically included so people like myself do not have to wade through and disregard all the "EWR" flights.
