Can I afford to live in Brooklyn or Queens???
Hey everyone, I am a 24 year old Italian female, and I was born and raised in Long Island, New York. I want to go back to school for my Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. I have been on the Houston, and Fort Lauderdale forum trying to decide wich city I would like better, but I recently visited both, and although I did like Houston, I feel nothing compares to NY!!! With that being said, I need to get out of Long Island asap, I have been bored out of my mind since I graduated college and I dont want to live there for another month of my life. So I am looking to move closer to the city, I would prefer Brooklyn becaue I have friends there, but am willing to move to Queens, also. I am looking for a "safe" neighborhood, I have two dogs and I need to be able to walk them at night. Also I want to be a quick subway ride away from the city, so I can get back and forth quickly to walk my puppies during the day. Also I am taking out loans for school so the cost of rent is definitly an issue. I was wondering if any of this is possible or if I should just move to Houston for a couple of years to finish school??? I do love NY and I would love to find a way to make this work. Im sorry for making this so long, but any advice would be great, Thank You!!!
I think even with money, your biggest obstacle is getting an apartment that will take not just one dog but 2. That can be really difficult. And as the other post asked what is your budget. The best way to make things like this work is to try and share with one of your friends, split everything.
And forget about trying to commute back and forth from school/work to home and back to school/work again in the middle of the day from Manhattan to walk the dogs. Especially if you are living in Maspeth or Gravesend!
Hopping on the train to walk your dogs doesn't sound very likely in Queens, though I wouldn't know about Brooklyn.
There aren't many trains in the Maspeth/Ridgewood/Glendale area.
Maybe you should look in Forest Hills, Kew Gardens and Woodhaven. The areas can be a little pricey but they're not too bad, and you can probably find a roommate easily which you're going to need if you're a student!
