NEW YORK, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Engineers have confirmed New York's No. 2 subway train plays the opening notes of a ballad from the musical "West Side Story" when the cars start moving.

The electronic whine sounds like the beginning of the song "Somewhere," The New York Times (NYSE:NYT) reported Saturday.

So THAT's what the train is humming! (Silly me, with all the times I've watched "West Side Story," you'd think I'd recognze it!)

The question, though, is -- WHY does the subway hum? Perhaps Fred will have the answer?

The train's motor, or to be more specific, the train's motor converting the 3rd rail electricity for power.

It has to do with the operating system in the new cars which, if I'm not mistaken, involve hydraulics. Those would be the model R-142's running in the IRT, and the R-143's and R-160's in the BMT/IND. I know that the latter emit a whiny squeak when the trains begin to move--since I don't work in the IRT division, I was unaware of the West Side Story notes...but you have to admit, it's appropriate since the #2 is, in fact, a West Side line!

Funny that this is news now. I heard a story on WNYC about this topic years ago.

I always noticed that distinctive three-note "song" that the new cars play when they begin to move, but I know nothing about West Side Story, so I never made that particular connection.

It might also be nothing more than coincidence.

I'm sure it is a coincidence -- but a nice one.
