Most areas they are totally different. People from Philly will go out of their way to compare Philly to New York, but New Yorker barely ever mention Philly or could careless about that city, Every city compares themselves to New York: NYC vs Chicago, NYC vs Bostion NYC vs Philly etc., and its all because New York is America's premiere city, its like How every country compares themselves to America cause we are the best. Most of these New York vs another city polls ( internet polls as well) are absurd do to the fact that the people making comments on the poll are usually from the other city, and New Yorkers usually are out numbered on the Poll 3 to 1, because New Yorkers don't take their time to compare themselves to these other little cities (compared to NYC all these cities are little) they already know their the best and don't have to go around proving it like people from Philly do their all over the internet. I know Philly is a good city to a lot of people and their are some similar things but not most.
I've lived in both metro areas in new jersey and I'd have to say Very Similar in relation to the rest of America as a whole.
philly is more sprawled brotherly and historical while nyc more classy diverse and fit
but both are very aged, urban, fast paced
NYC is a lot more fast paced then Philly. Infact out of all the Northeast cities Philly is the slowest moving city compared to NYC, Boston, Jersey City, Hoboken, D.C. People from Philly are a lot more laid back.
I think they're very different and that's how they should be. I like visiting Philly @ 4x a year. I like that they still have so many historic buildings standing in Philly. Great museums, friendly people and good places to eat. Of course NY & Philly are not the same. No two cities in this country are the same. I appreciate the difference.

Northeast philly reminds me of the north Bronx/east Flatbush/Canarsie in Brooklyn and parts of the south east queens. That's mainly because those parts of philly aren't filled with those old row homes you see all over the city.
If anything willimgton, DE looks like a giant philly neighborhood.
Philadelphia has a significant amount in common with Brooklyn (*all* of Brooklyn, not just the northern parts) but very little in common with the other boroughs. That's enough to get a "somewhat similar" in my book, but Philadelphia has way more in common with cities to its south--Baltimore, Richmond and to a lesser extent DC--than with NYC.
Parts of Brooklyn. Philly doesn't have areas like Flatbush, Brighton beach, crown heights. But east Flatbush, Canarsie and the north western parts do look like philly.
What resembles Queens more, Baltimore or Mattapan?
