Can anyone tell me what the area is like and/or what this hotel is like? My sister, brother-in-law, and their teenaged daughter are coming to NYC from Houston--i.e. visiting in June for a couple of days. Anything you can tell me, especially about the area, would be greatly appreciated.

It's probably fine. But then I prefer downtown rather than midtown. If I didn't already live here I personally would rather stay downtown when visiting but I am not sure that most tourists would feel the same way.Have they been here before and already done all the usual midtown stuff ? If yes, then maybe they would appreciate a different perspective. If no and the only thing they are going to do downtown is go to the Statue of Liberty then I don't know.
It is a perfectly safe and very interesting area... just not all that convenient to the usual touristy things that most people want to see on their first visit.

Hi bluedog. Thanks for your speedy response. I don't think they are into doing all the touristy things, since they've both been to NYC before. They will be here mostly to visit and reconnect with family--in Manhattan, the Bronx, and New Rochelle--and to enjoy the city in the process. Although, if they do decide to visit the Statue of Liberty I may come with them. I've been here for twelve years, and that's the one thing I haven't done. Typical New York thing... lol. If you think of anything else, please share, ok? Thanks again.

North End Avenue is at the north end (how else?) of Battery Park City. A perfectly fine area to wander around. And let's face it...what visitors to New York won't want to see things like the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, or take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry? (You'll also be close by the ultimate depths of capitalistic greed--I'm sorry, I meant to say, Wall Street!) And for anyone who might be interested in a little history, the old Subtreasury Building, once known as Federal Hall, where George Washington took the oath of office in the days when New York City was the capital of the United States.

It's fine. I stayed there in 2001 for an offsite meeting.

Thanks, everyone.

Nice area, nice hotel.. but for about the same rates.., check out the Ritz Carlton Battery Park!
Their occupancy rates are rock bottom and they are wheeling and dealing on room rates!
