Unless you are crawling out of a time capsule from the 19th century, I can't imagine how anyone would not be aware of what NYC has to offer and what to do with themselves. Unless of course you are looking for the less touristy stuff. What type of things do you enjoy? What are you looking for?
hang in central park, go to the top of the empire state building, walk down st. marks and shop, go down 5th ave by the park and go to tiffany's, fao shwartz, take the Staten Island ferry for free, go to times square and fight the crowds, go to china town and buy knock offs, go to broadway play, concerts, comedy shows, jazz bar in the west village, wait in line to be in the audience of a show....etc etc
You can visit the Metropolitan Museum & American Museum of National History and pay what you wish to enter as the admission price is a suggested contribution.
