In the last few weeks I've noticed that in my neighborhood they have been picking up recycling at around midnight. Typically recycling goes out Tuesday night for Wednesday morning pick up but I would say in the last 4-8 weeks they've been picking up Tuesday night around midnight. Is this a new thing??
Also, watched two san men (or rather stayed in my car and waited behind their truck for them to finish) drive their truck down the middle of the street. One guy runs ahead a few houses and put BOTH sides of the streets garbage onto the curb for pickup. They looked frantic, rushed, and an injury/ accident away with the way they were handling the trash and throwing. Couldn't help but wonder that if they only took their time.....

Just the complete opposite on my block. This morning around 7:30am,one guy driving the collection truck and the other guy loading...ONE bag at a time..walking at a slow pace...on ONE side of the street only!...I was in shock! They always worked the way you just described willk and I always shake my head in disbelief. This is Q4,run and dump district for the most part.
About the recycling, that is not a new thing. Recycling is done between 12:00am-8:00am in my neighborhood.

It seems like they want us to slow down and work like humans instead of animals. I guess the city dont want people getting hurt on the job or there is some other motivation.

They want the senior men to retire. They dont wanna lay off bottom guys, they want guys to retire and lower the overall number through attrition. The city won't save that much money laying bottom guys off.

They did this last time they were talking layoffs .They would give you a drop off or a set of baskets to do after your route was done. Most of the Savings from layoffs come from not having to pay for there health care.

I think the city is taking senior men out of their comfort zones. Cuts, route extensions, 8 hour days = retire.

the thing that worries me is that it's already April, and the new fiscal year starts July 1st, so is there really enough time to see the effect of all these new policies in order for there not to be layoffs?
I mean just a few days ago numbers like "1000 layoffs", "20% of the workforce", and even the "I could do this with 3400 guys" threat from Doherty himself were being thrown around...so if a few extra senior guys retire because of everything that's going on, can that really help junior guys in the short-term?
I'm not saying it can't, and I'm not talking about down the road either, I'm just wondering if these "trying to get senior guys to retire" policies have no relation to any potential layoff plans as of right now
