Exclamation safety of Astoria, Queens?

I've been told that most of Astoria is quite safe, and I'm going to check out a room for rent in a loft near 12th and Astoria.

Any opinions, thoughts on this area?

Astoria isn't known for high crime stats, nor is it known for outstanding low crime.

It isn't particularly dangerous and it isn't crime free.

If you step lively and keep your wits about you.

It's unfamiliar territory, so I'd suggest the standard - keep your eyes open and your wits about you. Be respectful, of course, but don't be too friendly too quickly.

If I were renting a room in Astoria or anywhere else, I'd be concerned about the people with whom I'd be sharing quarters.

I'm assuming you're talking about 12th and Astoria Park... well, that area is fine, as is most of Astoria. If you walk across the strip to the opposite side of the park, there's section 8 housing.. it's not really dangerous or anything, but some people are scared of people who are poorer than them.

That's what my head was telling me.. but lofts? It's a few houses and warehouses. The houses don't look like they would have lofts to me, but maybe they're not the typical lofts. Not the most eye-appealing area, yet not bad either.

It's an old warehouse building converted to lofts. Actually, I'm not sure of that, the ad only said 12th and astoria.

Thank you SO much for your replies, guys.

How would the walk from the subway be very late at night? I work late hours as a bartender, and google maps said the closest train is the N.

Thank you!

LOL this sounds like the place right next to my best friend's house, but they've been doing a lot of that in Astoria, so maybe not. It's about a 10-15 minute walk to the N, but it's virtually empty depending on what blocks you walk up.. you might pass some people hanging outside of bars, but no one scary.

It's not the best section of Astoria but it isn't the worst either.

Not the most aesthetically pleasing area, but I wouldn't be worried. I'd probably only do it if it was exceptionally cheap, because you can find really cheap places on better blocks in Astoria.

I've been seeing a lot of hip/hipster types descending into the subway to Manhattan. There goes the neighborhood.
