I get what Seventh is saying, it sort of has a post-industrial look to it. Kinda on that 70's futuristic tip, lol. It's hard to describe it. But yeah, it's an acquired taste aesthetically.

A colorful view of Roosevelt Island from the tramway on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Funny, when I clicked on the link and saw the caption I was shocked. It says "Roosevelt Island ,Manhattan " I have never considered Roosevelt Island as part of Manhattan. I always thought it was part of Queens.

And how can an Island be part of an Island? I mean I can understand it being part of New York County which Manhattan is but how can it actually be part of Manhattan ?

Is it just me or was this designation part of some real estate scheme ?

And yes,I know about Marble Hill but at least it was actually attached to Manhattan Island at one time before it was artificially severed. And even at that,it's now part of The Bronx to me no matter what anyone says.

Roosevelt Island is part of the Borough of Manhattan, and the descriptor is not referencing that it's part of the island of Manhattan. The Borough of Manhattan's boundaries are coterminus with New York County, but do not solely reflect the land mass that is Manhattan Island. The Borough of Manhattan also includes Roosevelet Island, Randall's Island, Ward's Island, Liberty Island, and Governor's Island in addition to Marble Hill, which is now attached to the mainland.

Thanks, bmw ! I never knew or would have guessed. I think I assumed that since you drive onto RI from Queens that it was part of Queens. You learn something new about NY every day no matter how long you have been here.
I assumed that Rikers was part of Queens for the same reason but recently heard that it is actually part of The Bronx.

How was Marble Hill severed from Manhattan and then attached to the Bronx? That is interesting.

I have only been to Roosevelt Island one time. So I didn't see much of it. It was a sunny day in May. I can't forget the view sitting in the park looking over at Manhattan. It was breathtaking. It was like I was like I was almost sitting on the water, with the trees and grass around me. It was so quiet as well. I have never had that feeling of being on the water sitting on a dock or park in Manhattan looking over at Jersey, Queens, Brooklyn or the Bronx. In Manhattan looking out on the water, I still feel like I'm a part of the land, not the water.

Who cares about the architecture with a view like that. But then again Seventh is an architecture student, so I respect his opinion on that.

You're welcome. That's one of the wonderful things about New York -- there's always so much to learn, no matter how long you've been in the city.

I remember reading a story about Manhattan school buses not being allowed to pick up kids from Roosevelt because they would have had to pass through Queens.

Its safe. I heard its not dog friendly. It was originally the home of mental institutions, pox wards, & prisons so it feels a bit sterile. There aren't a lot of businesses there. There are a few parks. There are pretty large nice apartments there.

It became detached from Manhattan when they built a shipping canal to connect the Hudson and Harlem Rivers. Then they filled in the old meandering river bed and Marble Hill became attached to The Bronx but remained officially part of Manhattan.
