At your budget there are plenty of options in the boros. I recommend getting out of East New York asap. There is no reason to live there unless you grew up there or you have no other options.

Plus a lot of it, most of it, is drug dealers vs. drug dealers, gangs vs gangs, nobody cares enough to report that, and the criminals themselves are not going to report it.

$1200 can even get you a studio or possibly a 1-BR in places like Riverdale, Hudson Heights or Astoria.
