What is your rent budget, I'm sure there are several options out there better than ENY?

At your budget there are plenty of options in the boros. I recommend getting out of East New York asap. There is no reason to live there unless you grew up there or you have no other options.

The simple answer is that not all murders are reported. There's several reasons why this could be, and none of them which we can conclude with no evidence.

Plus a lot of it, most of it, is drug dealers vs. drug dealers, gangs vs gangs, nobody cares enough to report that, and the criminals themselves are not going to report it.

For that money you could move to Ridgewood, Maspeth, lower Glendale or Middle Village...all way better than ENY.

$1200 can even get you a studio or possibly a 1-BR in places like Riverdale, Hudson Heights or Astoria.
