The upscale thrift shops still cost plenty of money. There are several on the Upper East Side that carry designer clothes (REAL designer clothes) but they're frightfully expensive.
Housing Works in Chelsea sells clothes as well as books and furniture (if it's still there).
Century 21 (a bargain department store) is also a good place for bargains. But it's exhausting.
I used to shop at a good clothing consignment store in Soho. I'm hoping I'll remember the name tomorrow after I sleep on it. A woman's name...starts with a V or a Z....
Is there a section for consignment shops in the shopping Zagat's?
i was also going to say century 21...there's one on 86th street between 4th and 5th avenue's in bay ridge, and then they also have one by the former world trade center.

Check the Memorial Sloan Kettering Thrift Shop on Third Avenue for some vintage wardrobe and home selections. The name "thrift" may be misleading, but as Viralmd noted, this is one of the stores that has real designer clothing, and the cause for which the items are donated is a good one.
Thanks Guys. I should have been a bit more specific, she's looking for those second hand stores. I will try the UES and I'll check out the Housing Works as well.
P.S. I love the Century 21 store, I live a few blocks from the Brooklyn store.
The consignment store in Soho is called Ina. They have a website, Inanyc.com.
I just checked it and they are selling all the clothes from Sex and The City..... (don't know if from movie or tv show).
I hope the sales help has gotten nicer over the years--the last time I was there I was thrilled to fit in a size 6 skirt and the (ugly) shopgirl witheringly commented that the designer's patterns were cut "huge".... So be prepared!

Sounds like the sample sales, which are perfect if one wears the same size as the model, but disproportionately represents the smaller end of the range.
I didn't mean you better be skinny, but be prepared for attitude from the sales help.
I never shopped sample sales, but it makes sense that it would all be size 4 and 6s. The sample size for shoes is five or something crazy like that (my feet are size ten).
Madison ave has a bunch of these consignment shops. I would check out newyork.citysearch.com and do a search on there.
