Default Relocating from Chicago

I am originally from Scranton, PA but I ended up going to Chicago after my first year of college. But I desperately want to go back East so I can see my family more and just live in New York for a change.

The only problem is that since I have been here for 3.5 years I have ruined my credit and got into a lot of financial trouble. The same thing happened to my boyfriend. We are worried about being able to find a place with all the "credit checking" going on in all the ads we have been looking over. My landlord now would probably give us a terrific reference and all but aggh, how do we get around this problem? His sister lives in the Bronx so we could potentially stay with her for like a month or two but it is two couples already living together so that would be a challenge.

I also want to know about how I can start looking for jobs...I don't have my degree yet or anything, just work experience. What if we are interested in a place that requires proof of income? How can I prove an income when I haven't moved there yet? Do you think landlords would be understanding?

Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks!

In general, no, landlords are NOT understanding. However, an individual/small landlord may be more flexible compared to a larger company. Offer to prepay rent (maybe six months rent in advance), or provide an extra large security deposit. And definitely look in a borough other than Manhattan.

Yes! Thank you for your advice. Sounds great. Yeah, I have no intentions of looking anywhere in Manhattan. I was even thinking about Hoboken.
Thanks again!
