It's all perception really.

Oh and the other day I also didn't hear any gunshots but I saw "Shooting" on the newsmap a block away from me... I stuck my head out my window and lo and behold, cops, ambulances and people being nosy. :P

Yea that happens alot just remember that some guns dont sound loud and if it was a drug hit by a hit squad they were probably wearing silencers on their guns which nowadays makes it hard to hear from 30ft away much less a block.......BTW were do you live?

Yeah I think everyone saw the headlines. But why does this confirm to anyone that "crime is spiraling out of control"? Yes there were many shootings in a short amount of time...but the reason it is noteworthy is because it is SO UNUSUAL..not because it is happening every day! That level of "action" (for lack of a better word) is RARELY the case in the past few years..so it makes a great headline of course! What else should be noteworthy? 10 years ago these headlines were COMMON, and today they are UNCOMMON....thats called improvement. Does that mean there is NO MORE CRIME? NO...it means that these types of incidents are becoming fewer....= we are getting safer. However, let's talk what REALLY happened yesterday....these incidents were of course drug related....so as I stated before...if you stop hanging with the homeys/drug dealers at 3am, this will not affect you no matter just about anywhere you live! And what else should be noteworthy? The response that will no doubt ensue by the police department..they will now clamp down further..which is a good thing. And I have seen them taking alot of proactive steps to maintain safer streets...which has helped keep crime going down..they will absolutely redouble their efforts in light of these recent incidences..so look for a heavier police presence in certain areas (as if this were even possible!).

Im going to go out on a limb and say it is just as likely to hear about 20 shooting incidents a day as it was 10 years ago I will be honest I just see more kids selling drugs more people being killed, robbed, and burglarized than in 1999.

I disagree 100%. I don't doubt that you are now SEEING more kids selling drugs..but the reality is that you were either NOT as alert/attentive/looking for it 10 years ago...but it was always there...and it was much more obvious 10 years ago. Today the drug dealers (at least the ones with 1/4 of a brain) know how to operate without getting caught..which is part of the reason why shootings/murders/crime is way down...why would the drug dealers want to shootup their own block and bring the cops to their door? it's bad for business, they know it, so they run their business more "cleanly." However, there are always the dummy low level kids who just do whatever without thinking..and they get caught and scooped off to jail....and that has always been the case. Secondly, there is NO WAY that we are more likely to hear about 20 shooting incidents a day now versus 10 years ago..thats just plain wrong. 10 years ago many swaths of the city were still the "wild west" and had grave problems...today that is not the case and much of the areas have cleaned up significantly.

Crime is not down, the reporting of crimes and quality of life incidents is not a priority of the Police Department. The other night I called the precinct about some kids loitering and spinning their car wheels. I was told to call 911 so they could file a report . The Police came by an hour later. I told them where the kids lived and I wanted to file a report. They talked me out of it saying they could do nothing. It seemed like they didn't want to write the report and told me to call 311. Crimes and other nuisances will always go down if the NYPD refuses to put it on paper. It is a numbers game.
