Harlem is not the worst neighborhood in NYC. Not by far.
It may not be fully gentrified, nor is it perfect, but it is definitely not the worst! Please stop the antics.
There are many horrible neighborhoods in Brooklyn and the Bronx that are not nearly as historically rich nor economically diverse as Harlem.

Ditmas Park (Flatbush). It was a stabbing on Caton & Malborough, a shooting on E. 18th & Church, and a serious assault on E.23 & Ditmas (although not technically Ditmas Park but it's 2 blocks away from me so it's still my neighborhood). I also know of someone who was shot at on Ocean Ave & Newkirk though it's not up there.

I just read the Gothamist map that last night there was a shooting on Gates & Marcy. I have over 20 family members that live on Quincy and Marcy which is directly around the corner. On their block, 95% of the Brownstones are very well maintained, people within the block all know each other, and everyone looks out. It is very quiet even on a summer evening. Kids are always outside playing, having a good time and LITERALLY one corner over there is a shooting. What if some of my elderly family members that live there and walk with canes were getting off the bus and walking past there as they do everyday? Would they have ended up like the lady in Coney Island last week? What if one of the kids happened to run around the corner after a ball and was hit by a stray bullet?
This is a perfect example of how Bedstuy is now. One block is quiet and the next one over people think it's a western movie.

You really must be from the Bloomberg for mayor party. Harlem has had around 14 shootings the past week and you say its not one of the worst hoods in the city! You need to open your eyes and see that this city's "official" crime situation is a illusion and many parts of the city are going downhill and quick....I said it when I first came on here in the summer the city is going to experience a big crime wave and it has. Crime is up when we admitt that then we can really work to fight the problem.

I've never believed the hype about Harlem. Some may call me insane-in-the-brain, but I feel more comfortable in Bed-Stuy than Harlem. All the NYPD units flooded up there to make it safe for yuppies and once that pulls back, oh snap!
I don't think NY is going down the drain, since all one has to do is look at some other cities. It's simply reverting to the mean before the next big rise/drop. The Crack epidemic inflated numbers while the 90s/00s boom deflated them. NY's natural homicide total IMO is 800-900/yr.

Oh please. Harlem at it's worst was as bad as anywhere in the city. Why do you think there are worst neighborhoods in the Bronx or Brooklyn? Let me guess, Harlem is in Manhattan lol. Really, I wouldn't hesitate to call Harlem the worst nabe in the city. It may not be, but it's closer to being the worst than it is decent.
Check the 2007 crime map, and please look at the crime statistics there. Look at all the shootings that happen there recently. Im always in Harlem and it's a rough place. I'm not saying the whole neighborhood, but there are still alot of bad elements in Harlem.
