Considering the crime stats, and the gargantuan number of people living/visiting NYC at any given time..the crime rates are EXTREMELY low. Futhermore, let's keep the links to the crime stats on this page also so people can have SOME idea what is happening in NYC as a whole AND in a particular neighborhood. Whether you believe the crime stats or not, they are still the ONLY gauge we have: NYPD - Precincts
I'm from Jersey, my girlfriend is from Suffolk, and we're living in Delaware right now. We want to move closer to both of our families after she's done with school, so we're looking at the NYC metro area.

I didn't want to derail the thread any more, but just to clarify, I don't have any problem with the city. I'm not scared of it. I visit all the time. I realize the crime rates are very low for a city of New York's size. But I don't want to worry about her. She's not a big fan of city life, and I don't want either of us to wonder if she's gonna make it home ok from Manhattan. I also don't want her to have to wait for me before she can go walking around the city.

So stories like this (I know this isn't the same area, but still...): Subway Platform Rape Victim Speaks Out - Gothamist: New York City News, Food, Arts & Events don't sit well with me.

I understand they're skewd, but I'd say the same for other states as well, and there definitely isn't as much violent crime as in other places. There's certain neighborhoods in other cities that you wouldn't be caught dead in because of the high probability of something bad happening to you.. you can't really say the same for here. There's some unsavory areas, but you can pretty much walk through them unharmed if you have street savvy.

This is why a few of us said you just shouldn't live here.. it's nothing personal, but if you take all those stories to heart, then you're going to be walking around with burdens on your shoulder that no one else does. We don't live scared, looking behind our back at every corner, and there's like 8 million people in the city.. so why should we, and why should you?

What other areas are you talking about because i think Brownsville and ENY are 2 of the worst neighborhoods in the country.

Mos I certainly understand why you would be concerned...but since your girlfriend is from Suffolk..let's look at what high profile random acts of violence has been happening in her nabe: Drunken Teens beat and kill immigrant for fun: Long Island Press - Charges Added, Upgraded in Patchogue Hate Murder Maybe next time some angry teens will turn their attention to women? Three men kidnap and gangrape young female: Man faces a half-century behind bars in rape of 17-year-old L.I. schoolgirl Man attacks and carjacks woman at the mall at 10am: Woman attacked in carjacking at Walt Whitman Mall -- Newsday.com Woman gangraped and several men robbed in park: 3 Suspects Arrested In Park Attack On Long Island - wcbstv.com So I guess I can make the same statement about Suffolk, where your girlfriend is from...."I realize that suffolk county has a low crime rate, but these random violent attacks just make me worry for women AND men so I am not sure whether I can recommend living there to any female or male because of these cases." This is what you are saying...right? If you like I can find more random violence for Suffolk, Delware, and Jersey...you get my point?

We have put forth the assertion that the crime stats are not IMMEDIATELY reflective of the murders that are occuring, as they are typically confirmed after an investigation (usually quite brief). For example, why immediately classify something as a murder when it could have also been a suicide? Accident? What is the only way to find out? INVESTIGATE..and that's their job to do it. So stats are changed as information comes in....they are an evolving number...we know this. So please don't expect any "murders" (we don't know if they were despite the flashy headlines from the papers) to be immediately tallied on the stats...when it is confirmed as a murder, it WILL BE ADDED. It is not a same day event!

Wait a minut... Delaware???? I just realized youre from North Delaware? Geez, New York should be fine. I remember a family member of mine was thinking of moving to Delaware, and I was shocked to see crime rates that rivaled the bronx easily, in RURAL areas. North Delaware was awful. If that is where you are coming from, than the stats should be on your side, youd probably be better in most of the U.S. (Yes I was very shocked at the Delaware stats, I think its mentioned here in the city-data forums in Delaware or Dover, Philly?)
