What's the deal with Coney Island? The area not the park.
All the Coney threads I see on here are about the amusement park, but I want to know about the area. Is it good or bad as a whole? I saw an apartment for rent on west 33rd street between Bayview ave. and Neptune ave. is that one of the better areas of Coney Island or worse? Are there any stores around there or on Coney at all? How are the trains and buses?

You should check that particular area in person. In general, the further west you go, the less desirable it is--but there have been some really good-looking new buildings put up in the far western reaches of Coney Island lately, so things may be changing.
You should also be aware that on one side of West 33 between Bayview and Neptune are the Gravesend Houses. Don't know how wonderful those might be.

I wouldn't live there, especially if you have school aged kids. Get closer to Bensonhurst if you can.

West 33rd Street was never that good of an area. You definitely should check the area yourself!!!
The train station is great because you have multiple trains as it is the last stop but you dont live close to the station. It is on Stillwell avenue and its about a 15 block walk.
I dont want to offend anyone who lives there but its not a great place to live. There arent many restaurants/bars and alot of the businesses and buildings are empty. There are many empty lots. I think people are holding on to them in the hopes that Coney Island will become another Atlantic City or will eventually be built up. In either case its not good now. They were supposed to start building in one of the parks but I read that it wasnt starting anytime soon.
I grew up going to Coney Island as a child, teen and adult. We loved going down on the rides and a stroll on the boardwalk and of course Nathans. Good luck with your decision.

Is it just bad looking with the empty lots and buildings, or is it actually a bad neighborhood? I'm getting the feeling that it can be kinda dreary looking there especially at night, is that what you are trying to say? Are the beaches actually nice?

coney island is a bad neighborhood. frequent shootings, lots of loitering, and rat-infested. i spent a lot of time in coney island, and my least favorite place to visit was those projects on 28th and mermaid, dubbed "pissy pink" by the locals.

Wow, I would have never thought it was that bad. Frequent shootings alone is enough of a statement to make me stay away.

I dont know about the shootings but you can google "crime in Coney Island Brooklyn" and see what comes up.
Some of the buildings there are or were crack infested. I dont know if they were cleaned up by now.
