If you are going to be working in The Bronx, Riverdale may well be your best bet. It is a part of The Bronx.
It is a very good area with lots of beautiful apartments overlooking the Hudson River, downtown and the Palisades in New Jersey. Some stunning views actually. It is much easier to keep a car there and many, maybe most buildings have garages underneath or assigned parking areas that don't cost that much for residents.
Some people pay 8 to 10 million for houses in Riverdale.
Because it is considered a little out of the way for someone working downtown, the rents are much much less than a comparable space in Manhattan but it is perfect for someone who will be working in The Bronx anyway.

Which hospital will you be at? Montefiore? Jacobi?
I dated an Einstein resident for a while, she lived in Riverdale and drove to both hospitals. It took about 10-15 minutes to get to Monte and about 30-40 mins to get to Jacobi via the parkways (which are beautiful drives). That's with traffic.
Riverdale's a nice little area. Not anything like Manhattan (not even UWS or UES), but much more convenient for getting to the Bronx hospitals. I'd definitely recommend it for your purposes.

For 200k a year, consider building equity in the UES even if your /month 'rent' is more.

WHOA ....10,000 a month is a low salary ? Good grief I'd consider myself rich if I bought home money like that lol ....I have a 1 bedroom in Brooklyn and pay 1000 a month. The L train is literally 2 blocks away and a few stops away from Manhattan and and me and my two kiddos live good in the city and Im on PA. You might wanna consider the outer boroughs if you dont think you have enough for the UES ALTHOUGH I would LOVE to live in Manhattan...It's up to you .

thanks very much ! the budget break-down really helps. I realize there's variation for certain things between people, ie groceries, eating out, etc., but this really helps.
