That's a great link. My dad grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, so I sent him the link to see if there's anything he wants to tell me about his history.....

I remember my dad talking about the Ellory Bops and some other gangs. Back when gangs fought with their fists with the occasional knife fight or tire iron tossed into the battle. Today it's 15 year old punks with guns shooting you for laughs.

I assume you think it's "crazy" because of the inclusion of the word "gay" in the name. Just FYI -- "gay" didn't become commonly associated with homosexuality until the mid-1960's, which is well after the Gaylords referenced in this article were in existence.

Great link,Seventh.Thanks.
Good history for all those who like to think that gangs are a recent phenomena.
Too bad about The Gaylords.I was hoping they were an early West Village gang. LOL

Wow. I saw The Wanderers years ago, but I had no idea that any of the gangs in that movie were real (or, rather, based on real gangs). It does remind you how the more things change, the more they stay the same. Thanks for that.

the gaylords were a white gang who started in chicago and they were tough back in the day, dont let the name fool you they fought hard with the latin kings etc, they were a white gang who fought with the hispanic gangs who were becoming stronger in chicago, someone also told me the name stood for Great American Youth Loving Our Race Destroying Mod cut: language(racial slur for hispanics)

Yeah and people think Gangs are a new phenomenon in NYC, they are in fact a historical part of NYC, and there were TONS of gangs..literally every block/neighborhood had their won gangs...and they all liked to fight...gangs based on race, neighborhood, religion, school..not to mention the MOB that pretty much ran the city/NYPD/politics, etc. The difference today is that the fewer gangs are more deadlier because TODAY its all about the money/drugs...surprise huh...our society is all about the money..gangs are no different. Cool to learn about it though.
