Are there any noticable differences between the UES and UWS?
I'm just curious as to how similar they are. From an outsiders' POV (me), they seem almost the same, but there has to be SOME differences...right?

UES = more moneyed, with somehow-"crisper" blocks (more linear, tidy, and similar), fewer surprises, and a less eclectic/eccentric mix of people than the UWS.
It's something like: UWS = mixed-bag college town, on a large scale, whereas UES = affluent vertical suburbia.

I know this is vague, and probably not the case with everyone, but for me they just have such a different feel. Being on the Upper East Side always felt like going to my Aunt's house...kind of stuffy and you always felt like there was something fun happening somewhere but not there. The Upper West Side just felt like you were in the middle of everything. It sounds funny but the UES almost felt like an outer borough to me at times. I lived on the UWS for 11 years so that may have had something to do with it.

I have lived on both sides and there is a big difference in my opinion. UWS has a younger demographic 30s, baby carriages, noisy, lots of large dogs, more entertainment options, more affordable stores, great subway access, and is much more casual in attire. UES (west of third) is mostly older people 50s+, expensive dining, designer shops, yorkies and purse dogs galore, poor subway access, expensive attire, museums galore, very few young children or baby carriages and quiet. These observations are generalizations but that is my experience living on both sides.

I, too, have lived both on the East and West sides and I don't agree with some of your thoughts. Every other dog on the UES seems to be an enormous golden retriever. Along with great Danes and Labs. And dodging tricycles, kids on scooters on the UES is becoming a real sport. TONS of families.
For me, the most salient difference is the 'busy-ness' of the UWS, compared with the more staid, quiet UES.
