And ask a highly compensated professional or someone with lots of disposable income where they would rather live, New York City or Houston/Dallas/Alabama/North Carolina/wherever, chances are..most would go with New York. Grads from top schools always want to to New York/SF/LA...a lot leave these areas because of costs, which is fine, but it's ridiculous to sit here spend vast ammounts of times posting and to convince people that the south or whatever Moderator cut: inappropriate you came from is better and more impressive than New York.

There is a reason New York (especially Manhattan) is 5X as costly as those other areas.

In my opinion, a great city isn't one that you need to spend a fortune on to enjoy. If you can't enjoy a city without going broke, then it's truly not the best city.

I'm simply not impressed by NYC. It's really as simple as that. If I moved, I probably wouldn't miss it either.
Yikes.

Well then, stay away from New York City, Paris, London, San Francisco, Zurich, Rome, Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, Berlin, Venice, Monaco, Sydney, Florence, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Vancouver, Honolulu, Barcelona, etc.

You're correct. None of them are great cities. How stupid of me to think such a thing!

NyC is the best city in the world. People don't dream of moving to wherever you came from. Your NY dream failed, sucks for you.

But NYC is the best city and no other city possesses what NYC has. When I'm finally done with med school, I'm done with the crappy south and I'm going straight to NYC so I can live an interesting life.

Did someone just say Houston, Miami, LA, Chicago, etc aren't better than NYC, but Austin might be??? NYC offers more than Austin just on one block. Nothing is unique about that city.

Then why is it that you decided to move to NY? Im young with no kids and I am going crazy in Atl. I feel like Im in a big town in Long Island rather than a MAJOR city. As expensive as NY there are still ppl moving there in droves. Ppl are willing to live with multiple roommates in a crummy part of town just to be able to afford to live there. And like someone else posted there is a reason why things are 5x more expensive than other place like say Atl. I love NY I cant wait to be back there.

Exactly. NYC is great if you're young with no kids. However, being that NYC is as expensive as it is, do you really see yourself living in this city, trying to raise a family, knowing that you can get live much better for a cheaper price?

Honestly I dont want kids but if that changes I would absolutley without a doubt raise them in NY. I wont have it anyother way. Besides the fact that I wouldnt have to live in Manhattan I love love love Brooklyn and could tolerate Queens and Nassau County although I would prefer to live in Brooklyn

And what do you consider living better? Because now that I am in Atlanta I see how cheap housing is and what you could get for the money and I still want to go back to NY. My living situation is really the best Ive had ever but its not enough. I spend to much time on the road there isnt enough diversity I could go on but that another thread. I beleive you get what you pay for. Cheaper cost of living=less of what you are used to. If you want to exchange city life for country life just to save money be my guest but I cant imagine being here for the rest of my life

Not everyone wants kids and if I'm not mistaken, aren't you from NYC? Do you feel inferior than people who are from Atlanta or Charlotte? Did NYC ruin your childhood? How many million kids have been raised in NYC?
I'm pretty sure lots of them are happy with their lives.

This is so ridiculous, I was raised in Houston and I don't see how my childhood was better than someone who was raised in NYC and it's suburbs.

If suburban life is what you're after, I would far prefer Connecticut or Westchester to anywhere in the south.

This thread is very open minded. There are so many variables, you can break it down by borough and still get very mixed answers. I have been to Manhattan and love the big city feel, endless things to do, the big crowds of people, shopping, food and sightseeing. Many people say they don't visit everything in the city, or only do once in awhile. But its the same for me in Rochester, I still have not been to the theater or Charlotte beach. I really think that if you can afford it, you either like it or you don't. I assume most people would love to live in the city, but there are too many reasons why a person won't or can't.

For a better answer you could have said, cost of living aside, is NYC the best city to live in?

So yes, it's cost.
No it's not always cost. People have things called desires, needs, wants, change of perspective, maturity, growth etc. These things intertwined may spark a change in their lives. Therefore NYC may not be for all people. It's not rocket science. It's a subjective issue. I have no problems with living where ever you want, but your analysis is flawed. You are right that many leave because of cost, but many leave because they WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT! Not too hard to understand. It's a matter of preference. I lived in NYC most of my life, travelled to many other places. I know people who have lived in NYC that would not move back, and met some that never lived in NYC, but visited that would not even dare to move. So your statement is only one aspect as to why people move. There are millionaires; well-off people that leave NYC to live elsewhere, while there are millions of people living paycheck to paycheck still living in the city (broke and uneducated as could be, that wouldn't leave it, so it's not always money). I made my case with you.

You may not fancy living in it (you may be a country/suburb person), but there is no denying that New York is an amazing, overwhelming, IMPRESSIVE city. To say New York is unimpressive is frankly, stupid. People don't drop millions of dollars to live in "unimpressive" NYC. But I understand, I lived in dumpy section of London and lived in a tiny flat and I tried to convince myself that London was a terrible, overrated city (because I couldn't afford it) but deep down, the true reason I disliked it was because I couldn't afford it back then. Now, it would be silly for me to say that London isn't an impressive city.
So your insight is a bit limited on life in NYC. You live in London, not NYC. I love NYC, I have to keep saying it, cause to you and maybe other posters, I may be a hater or nay sayer. I'm not. It's a simple matter of choice. Money is one aspect of things. I lived in beautiful Clinton Hill, and never lived in some crappy place, like East NY or, South Bronx etc. I never lived in projects or bad areas.
I loved it when I was there, and still love the city. I come when I feel like it, and want to see my people. Then go back to where I call home. My life, my decisions. NYC will always be a place I love, just not to live. Some people don't like the cold and leave NYC.

Your issue with not having money in London is your problem. Some people have all the money in the world, and still move to places like Atlanta, Houston, Miami, Tennessee...Again, it's by choice my friend, not only money.

I never said it was not impressive. NYC is one of the most unique cities on Earth (Go reread my post). We all know that, however, you have people that would not move here for a million dollars. They visit, it's not for them. AGAIN, SUBJECTIVE!! What floats your boat, I always say.

I want to raise my kids here. Having a childhood in a city like new york is second to none. Definantly made me a more aware person. I was used to differant cultures and customs as that was a natural part of being from here. Raising your kids in a worldly setting is much better than the south
Again, living in NYC is a matter of what, you say? CHOICE!! It's the best for you, not millions of others who decide to live elsewhere. Yes, there is a level of wisdom gained from living in NYC, but on the flip side, there's also a level of ignorance from many who live in NYC and never travel. They don't see the world, and think NYC is the center of the Earth. I know some people in Brooklyn that are in their late 20s that never stepped foot outside the city, or even went to Long Island. That's ignorance, my friend.

Go ask millions of Doctors, Lawyers, and rich Businessmen in this country why they live elsewhere and not NYC, you'll get a million different answers. Most of them are making good money, but choose to live elsewhere. You have no valid point there. You're looking at things on your level, not an open mind. Take no offense.

NYC is uniqure, not the best. AGAIN, subjective. Without trying to be disrespectful, some people here need to open their minds, and stop repeating nonsense. It's got plenty of things you like, but there are people in Montana that love where they live too, that wouldn't trade it for the world.
I hope you can see what I am trying to convey to you guys. It's a simple matter of choice. If that were the case, why are people loving Seattle, Atlanta, Raleigh, Miami? Etc..I know people in Miami that absolutely hate NYC. I used to get offended when I was younger, but it's their preference.

Again, opinion not fact. Know the difference between the two.
Ask someone in Austin,TX who likes horses and nature. Ask them if Manhattan can offer that to them. Be real.

That was me ten years ago. Single, no kids and loving life in NYC. Manhattan nightlife on the weekends, enjoying clubs, lounges, restaurants, and the best the city has to offer. You couldn't keep me away from it. Been there, done that. I grew up, my tastes changed, and I moved, so have millions of others.
I also like my space. I refuse to live in a 2 BR apt with more than one or two people. I hate cramped spaces. I absolutely hate small quarters. I refused to share my 1BR apt when I was there, and now more than ever.

You don't want kids. That makes things easier. I refuse to raise my kids in the hustle and bustle of NYC. My choice, just as you have yours.

I hope some people reading my replies will understand the common point I am trying to make. What makes you happy in NYC, may make someone else miserable in that same city. Money is not always the case. People have wants and needs that NYC may not offer. Some are young, vibrant and can deal with a 600sq ft apt in the city, while to others it's hell.
