Default Quick Question about Jamaica, Queens

Hi everyone,

I'm coming up from Austin, TX (born & bred Londoner though) to see a couple of the weekend day games at Citi Field later this month.

I'm staying at the Hampton Inn on 144-10 135th Avenue. My question is this: Would it be better to get the hotel to transport me to and from the games, as I'm not at all familiar with that area of NYC, or should I just get the subway or a cab?

I've heard some things about Jamaica that aren't very complimentary, but that doesn't bother me coming from one of the roughest parts of London!

Anyway, any advice is greatly appreciated!

The JFK Hampton Inn is located in South Ozone Park(or South Jamaica?), not Jamaica. You probably saw the "Jamaica, NY" in the address. It's a postal thing unique to Queens. Getting from there to Citi Field by public transportation would require you to take the bus and 2 trains. Since you're going on a weekend, expect construction to be going on on the rails and detouring the trains. It's all up to you. If you know how to make your way by public transportation back home, it really shouldn't be a problem understanding the routes here. Otherwise, there's always the cab.

It's going to be tough to find a yellow taxi from that area: you might have to call ahead for one.

Thanks a lot people, much appreciated. I know that the hotel provide transportation, for a price obviously, so I may just stick with that.

The question is now how I go about getting from Citi Field back to the hotel after the game?

Cheers!

From Citifield to your hotel, if you can't find a car service or cab from the stadium you can just hop on the 7 train to main street/flushing (1 stop) and there are usually yellow cabs (and gypsy cabs) at the south west corner (main st/roosevelt) after you get out of the train.

If you're hungry and like chinese food, there are some excellent options in the flushing area for very cheap ($5-$10). There is also some good korean food, but requires a walk and is more costly.

Since you lived in London, as an ex-pat you may like indian food, if that's the case then go check out jackson heights for some authentic eats.

Also, you cannot call and reserve yellow cabs, they only pick people up off the street (or at cab stands). But you can call for car services, ask your hotel for some car service numbers (keep in your phone) that you can call to pick you up from the stadium. Print out a map from google maps so you know where to have them pick you up.

That's just great info, thanks so much.

the hotel should have a concierge. it may be easier to utilize that to get a cab to pick you up from the hotel.

If you get the Hotel's Concierge to call you a car service, which will be what he probably calls (Lincoln Town Car vs yellow cab service), you just have to ask the Car Service Driver on route if he can pick you up afterwards. Most likely, he will give you his card with personal Cell Phone number, thus enjoying a personal fee for service from you, devoid of the Car Service's commission.
In my experience, most would be more than happy to oblige you.

Best of luck, and enjoy

Everyone has given the proper advice to you. All the same things I would have told you. BagLunch just left out 1 thing. To get to Jackson Heights, you would take that train in front of you 6 stops towards the city, to the 74th st station. Go to street level, and the 1 block of 74th st between Roosevelt and 37th ave must have a dozen restaurants. Enjoy your stay. Go Mets!!
