Any of you guys has this new EDL? NYS DMV - Enhanced DMV Photo Documents for U.S. Citizens Who are Residents of NYS
I went to DMV to upgrade/renew my DL to this EDL. Took me 2 hours and $75 for a new EDL that expires in 2018

The weird thing is the lady who processed my paper told me up front the EDL is a gimmick and a scam to get more money. She hated it because she needs to do more paperwork than a regular DL. She also told me that if anyone got your EDL, they can travel out of the country with it.

I took it all with a grain of salt. I mean, the guy who takes my EDL must look like my twin to get away with it, right

Anyone has this EDL?

You can travel out of the country with this document, but ONLY within the Western Hemisphere and ONLY by land or sea. This is not valid for air travel in the Western Hemipshere.

It's easier just to have a passport.

if you are a driver to Canada (or take a cruise out of NY) then its helpful to have the converted license. But if you have a valid passport, you could have gotten it for as low as $20. Sometimes its helpful to have a 2nd photo ID in your wallet. But heres the link: U.S. Passport Card.
Beware that these cards are RFID. This means that there is a computer chip in the card. It doesn't have your personal information, but it does acess a computer that does. Next time you walk into an airport you will show up on the security grid

I don't know but it sounds useful for a minority. My friends and I were pulled over by a VT state trooper on our way back home, and he asked us for passports. My friend told him we didn't have them of course, and I was sitting in shock disbelief. A shame bec. it was a fun skiing trip until then.

I intend to use this as an additional proof of US citizenship. The post above is just one example of how the authority increasingly asks for proof of immigration status.
I am aware of the RFID issue and yet I will soon apply for a new passport and passport card. There is no thing like too many document.

I live in WA and we also have that option, but I thought I was only for travel to Canada. That is kind of wierd, because at the border, they run your license plate and check it against your drivers license then ask you where your are from anyway. If you have non WA passengers in your car, they still have to have passports to cross the border with you.

Got my EDL today, a week after I applied. They have the old pic and old signature on my DL. Somebody didn't do their job right.
I will have to stop by DMV this week again for them to fix this.
