Hey guys and gals. I thought I would create this thread about NYC myths and misconceptions.

I've been to NYC many times and if I were to believe everything folks online say about NYC, I'd never go. For example: "Nyer's are rude. You'll get cursed out for asking a question".

I always ask questions when I am in NYC and not once has anyone ever been rude or cursed me out. That does not mean it will not happen it just means that the myth about NYer's being uptight and rude is not 100% correct.

Some of my non-native family & friends think NYC is infested with crime, graffatti, and drugs. Of course some of these people have never been north of the mason-dixon line. I think they watched too many 80's movies.

Good point, but it often was true from the mid-70s to the early 90s (think of the subways, for one). Now it's probably safer than many places south of the mason-dixon line

Let's see.....that it is all a "concrete jungle" with no "green". I don't have the exact source, but I believe I read somewhere that NYC has the greatest percent of land devoted to parks of any city over 500,000 in population in the US. And I'm not just thinking of the obvious places like Central or Prospect Park. Go to places like Seton Falls nature preserve in the northeast Bronx and you'll be shocked what "green" can exist in an otherwise very urban, semi-rundown neighborhood within NYC.

That people like the whores on Sex in the City are seen as anything more than whorish morons.
That moving to NYC from Iowa and walking dogs for 2 years while you're going to NYU makes you a "real New Yorker". Or that the same person could ever be anything more than a transplant.
That you have to "fight" with people in NY or else you are taken advantage of or pushed around.
That New York is a "tough" city.
That New York doesn't have all the same stores you'll find in any mall across America, because they do.

I know this thread isn't really about it, but are there any mythical myths about NYC?

Like a monster in the Hudson river, or a rat man in the subway system?

No one in NYC has a car. Many people on this site insist that this is true!

Myths Ive found to be totally and completly false:

-that NYC is dangerous. It's actually the safest major city in the US. go ahead, look it up.

-that NYers are rude. Ive lived in a bunch of big cities, and the people here are very open and welcoming. You realize, they haveto be. NY is a transient place and peopleare constantly coming hereto pursue career, educational, and dream oriented goals.

Actually, this part is true. Business dealings in NY are particularly dishonest and cut throat. Every other person you run into is running a scam, low balling you, misleading. It's tiring. I've lived in the metro area my whole life, don't try to tell me otherwise.
