I am asking you to name your top 5 NYC neighborhoods and why. Might also be fun to add your least favorite and why. Here are mine:
1-Fort Greene- beautiful housing, proximity to parks & cool cultural mix
2-East Village- historically bohemian and edgy
3-Jackson Heights- great cultural mix and cool older apartment buildings
4-Lower East Side- Traditional immigrant mecca with so much history
5-Coney Island- Just a fascinating place with great iconic significance
Least Favorite- Upper East Side- too stodgy for my taste

1-Midtown West, Manhattan- Next to the center of the universe & it's still more affordable
2-Sunnyside/Woodside, Queens- The most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in the world
3-Bedford Park, Bronx
4-Parkchester, Bronx
5-Pelham Parkway, Bronx
Right, so as I've mentioned in previous posts, I don't really like the city. Nonetheless, I was born and raised here so I've seen it all. These are five neighborhoods that I like, and they're not in order of most favorite down:
Astoria, Queens
Bay Ridge, Brooklyn
Upper West Side, Manhattan
Van Cortlandt Village, Bronx
Westerleigh (I think that's what it was), Staten Island
I think one neighborhood per boro is the best way to do it.
But then you have to consider Staten Island a Boro! No way!
Staten Island is a great borough whose crappy commute options take its credibility down quite a bit. On the plus side, that means no Yuppies and there is not enough public housing buildings for crime to occur in most areas. The demographics of Staten Island reflect the ethnic make up of the city decades back.

I like giving Staten Islanders a hard time. It just feels more like Jersey than NYC, but I agree there are a lot of cool things. I love the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art and the Greenbelt is incredible. Snug Harbor is also really cool. Most of the residential areas feel more suburban which make it hard to crack my top 5 in terms of neighborhoods.
