Imagine what our city would be like if these plans had gone into effect. Think about what STaten Island might look like if they had built the line in 1912.

What a great thread.

I believe that Staten Island would have been in contention for more entertainment events if it had subway access available. The lastest would be the NJ Nets possibly moving to Staten Island instead of Brooklyn (just a example).

If Staten Island wants to get more events and entertainment options thrown their way then they need the subway to do it.
The population of Staten Island would definitely increase if a subway connection were built to either Manhattan or Brooklyn. Too bad there isn't a connection today--or one planned, as of yet.

I would argue that Queens needs it the most.

The biggest borough with only 3 lines

...For which you may thank Robert Moses. The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was built to accommodate a mass transit line. Moses declared that no such thing would ever happen (same is true for the Throgs Neck Bridge between Queens and The Bronx).

More recently, there was actually a proposal to extend the #1 line from South Ferry under the harbor to connect with the Staten Island Railroad. Staten Islanders made quite a fuss, and MTA dropped the proposal. It seems their objection was to making the borough directly accessible to the rest of the city by subway. Which goes to show that you simply cannot account for some people!

Yea, the NIMBY crowd strikes again at progress.

Here's another original subway proposal that could be implemented, and would make for some interesting new service patterns if it was...

The original Broadway BMT (think: N,Q,R,W trains in Manhattan) was supposed to run up Central Park West, not into Queens. If you take an uptown N train, look outside the windows on the right side of the train leaving 57 Street. You'll see a ramp rising up as the train passes. That ramp is the roughed-in turnoff to take Broadway trains west, to Columbus Circle.

When the IND subway was constructed, the plan to run Broadway trains up CPW was abandoned. Think about it: less than two blocks' worth of new tunnel construction, from 57 St./7 Avenue to Columbus Circle, and there could be all sorts of new service patterns.

Likelihood of this happening: virtually none. But it's fun to dream!
