In my field (engineering) we make about $100,000 here in the south and I can't justify moving there unless I was offered at least twice that considering the outrageous rent prices. It's sad that someone with a six figure salary would "squeak" by every month after paying rent on a 600 sq ft apartment. Why do so many people want to live there again?

Using $100k as the salary, and based on filing as a single person, I calculated $66,274 net annual pay ($5,522/month). People are able to get (not "squeak") by on much less than that but, yes, it IS an expensive place to live.

I don't know about that. I lived on the border of Washington Heights and Inwood and I think it would be pretty hard to live up there with an income of $36,000/year for a couple. But I could be wrong -- it certainly wouldn't be the first time .....

Oh trust me, I'm not saying its easy, but it is doable as many individuals/couples are doing it. And there are still many 1bedrooms for 1300 to 1500 available in Inwood, even west of Broadway, but thats changing quickly.
