This is actually the best plan...although people seem to be getting too computerized to do what used to come naturally.

Can you use your debit card at the booth?? I haven't spoken to a token booth clerk in years since I always buy at the vending machine.

If I were to use the Long Island Rail and the L train everyday, what kind of a card or pass should I get?

For the LIRR, you would get a monthly pass if you're riding everyday and an unlimited monthly MetroCard.

Thanks omigawd. I'm really struggling with deciding whether I should drive to work or use public transport. Driving would take ideally 23-29 min but upto 45-50 min in traffic. Not to mention finding a parking spot and then walking to work.
Public transport however, would require me to shuffle between LIRR and the subway. That's 2 sometimes 3 trains and it would take about an hour (give or take a few minutes). The good thing is that the subway station is just a few steps from work.
I may be wrong in interpreting this but sounds like either option is going to take an hour of commute....one way.

In case silly little details like the air you breathe factor into your decision, keep in mind that the subway, being gigantic electric trains, doesn't contribute to pollution. You also never have to worry about where you're going to park your train.

Preventing pollution was not on my list but I'll be sure to put that as a plus in favor of using public transport. And yes......the parking problem would be a huge plus.
My small town brain is beginning to realize that 45 minutes to an hour of commute is not unusual here. I used to 30 miles to work back home and it would only take me 30 minutes.
