i'm out of state right now and want to move back to NY but am having trouble finding a job. I've tried emailing/submitting my resume online to various temp agencies but have had no luck as far as getting a response from them.
i'm going back to NY in a week to try to get an appointment with a temp agency in person...any suggestions on what i should do, where i should go, etc.? is it something i could just walk in and do or do i need to call in advance to set up an appointment? what are some temp agencies that are worth the time/effort?
It's nearly impossible to get an interview with a temp agency from out of town. There are so many people who are "thinking about moving to New York" but never actually move, that the agencies don't waste their time pursuing such people.
Even once you move here it's hard to get an interview because people are looking for "New York experience." It took me over 3 months to get an interview with an agency, despite the fact that I had temped for years elsewhere (for a national agency that had offices in New York!).
On top of all of that, the temp market is truly dreadful at the moment. Many corporations, banks and law firms have a "temp freeze" in place to cut costs. The only positions that they fill are medium-term, maternity leave-type positions. If someone calls in sick for a day or two, most places are forced to make do without temp coverage. Getting assignments is really tough right now.
Whatever you do, you must get an appointment in advance. They won't see you if you just show up. In fact, they may get annoyed and never see you at all that way.
thanks for your honesty. it really does suck because i'm actually from ny but it seems like its so hard to move back...
but i'm going to keep trying. i need to make this happen in less than 60 days...the lease at my apartment is up and i don't want to move to another apartment where i am currently located.
