Brooklyn
I'm a writer interested in moving to NYC in the next year (specifically Brooklyn). I don't know much about the city, but I'd like to live near other writers/artists, and not too far from Manhattan. Also, I'd like some restaurants and bars close by. I'm in the early stages of planning the trip, so I'm not concerned with rent prices right now, but I will be living alone. Any thoughts?

Prospect Heights is a pretty reasonable suggestion. There may be more artists in Williamsburg and Greenpoint (and the artist colony has lately been expanding to the northern reaches of Bushwick), but those areas are going to be expensive because, as always, the hipsters and yuppies have followed the artists' trail and jacked up the prices.

Honestly, the artists in this city have been used as real estate pawns for the last few years. They used to be in Williamsburg, but got kicked out when they raised the property value, and then got moved to DUMBO, this time as a planned move to raise the property value by developers. Now they're in the south bronx, which developers are now renaming SoBro, and are currently in the process of kicking out the artists again to sell as luxury condos, though much of that has stalled thanks to the recession, and eventual collapse of the real estate market in this city.
