I wouldn't totally write of Washington Heights and Inwood. I feel this area is overpriced, especially Inwood but it is still relatively way cheaper than downtown Manhattan.

Hey if you find a nice building with a nice sized apartment that is near a train line why would you not consider it? These type of situations do exist in Wash. Heights/Inwood despite what some will tell you, they are just a little hard to find at times. Be prepared for broker fees though.

I am planning to move to Queensborough and contemplating accepting a teaching position at queensborough community college. I really appreaciate if somebody can provide me with information on affordability of housing or renting in the area. Which one is better as cost effective mechanism. I currently live in Atlanta and I understand that cost is no macth to New york but I would like to see how unaaffordable life is in the Queens area. Any information of safety would help.

thank you.

How many bedrooms? Just one bedroom, or do you have a family?

I think if you don't have a lot of money you might just have to learn how to keep yourselves safe in otherwise dodgy neighbourhoods. But that's true in every large city, even San Francisco. Maybe, like San Francisco, try more word-of-mouth.

I'm planning on moving to Washington Heights and/or Inwood, and I'm not Dominican. What reservations do people have about that neighborhood?

Washington Heights west of Broadway and North of the GW Bridge up to Fort Tyron park is a really nice area, but is more expensive than regular parts of Washington Heights or Inwood. Also the best neighborhoods in Inwood are also west of Broadway.

Default Up & Coming Areas of the Bronx

Following the current trend of gentrification, New York City's real estate market has sky rocketed. Manhattan, Brooklyn, and now Queens is pushing the lower-middle income households out. However, the only borough still affordable and stubborn towards gentrification is the Bronx. Look in the areas of:
Riverdale
Pelham Bay
City Island
Throgs Neck
Kingsbridge Heights
Pelham Parkway
Morris Park
and Bedford Park (Closer to Norwood)
