Isn't Riverdale that area farthest Northwest? It gained Whites or at least stayed the same. Some went from no majority to White majority.

Also if it were very close to a subway that'd be even better! I saw some apartments in Inwood, Chelsea, and Washington Heights for around 800-900 dollars a month. What do you all think?
Try Brooklyn:
Williamsburg near the Bedford Ave. L train stop. Only 1 stop to Manhattan. I grew up there when it was a mid/lower class dump. Now it's very gentrified. Also Greenpoint near the Nassau Ave or Greenpoint Ave G train stops. Park Slope isn't bad but more expensive and further to Manhattan.

NOT CHEAP ANYMORE! Just as expensive as parts of Manhattan.

Greenpoint might still have some deals. I have friends there who don't mind either the G train or shlepping over to the L or 7. Red Hook is just starting to get cool but might be a bit scary for a couple of women from out of town. Basically if you are above say 125th street you might as well look at Brooklyn or Queens because it's just as far from what's happening in Manhattan (unless you hang in Harlem) and depending on the location just as convenient if not more to transportation.

I think it depends on the part of Red Hook. The part close to the subway (Smith-9 Sts stop) is pretty scary. Other parts are safe, but more isolated. I live in Red Hook and like some things about it, but get irritated by the lack of easy transportation and people in the neighborhood who are dirty and litter.
But, finding something cheap in a cool neighborhood with good access to Manhattan is going to be hard and I think the OP is going to have to sacrifice a lot for $800-900 rent.
