I'd take the UWS - those other locations are Hell's Kitchen. Not my cup of tea.

85th and Broadway on the Upper West Side is almost certainly considered to be the "best" location of the three you've listed. For myself, however, given those choices, I think I'd go with 34th and Ninth--because 34th Street is a main drag, and I've never had a problem with living on a main street. (20th Street and Ninth Avenue should probably be considered Chelsea, and not Hell's Kitchen, which is further uptown).

True, it's Chelsea. But it's still not very nice (in MY opinion). I've never liked Chelsea.

UWS is nice, but it seems so quiet, like no one would be around at night. 34th and 9th seemed good for that-- like it'd always be busy, but I'm not too familiar with it.

I'd also weigh in with the selection of the UWS. 34th & 9th can be lively, but it can also be overrun at times, and just has such a hectic pace that's not really the best place for residential living, IMO.

85th and Broadway is lively and there are plenty of people around at night. 9th ave may have people around late, but they may not be the kind you want to encounter. If late night safety is your concern it still the UWS. Don't confuse the UWS and UES.

85th and Broadway.No question.It's a real residential neighborhood .
34th an 9th is a little seedy and spooky. And where would you grocery shop ?
At 20th and 9th you are going to be paying through the nose to live in a very overrated neighborhood.

It could depend on other criterias that you may have to consider, but personally, it would be 85th and Broadway. It's a nice residential area, safe, and close walking distance to stores and restaurants. However, if you work downtown, then this might not be the ideal place in terms of commute.

I don't like Chelsea at all, so 20th and 9th is out of the question, unless you want to be close to Chelsea Piers.

34th and 9th is not as bad, but it does get kind of shady at night time. The nightlight there is not the type you want to get involved in. However, if your into photography - the bright side is B&H is right on the corner!
