Default Best Commute to Greenwich Village (NYC) Area

Hi!

My husband and I--- and our 3 kids (3rd grader, 5th grader, 9th grader)-- are moving to the NYC area for my husband's job in Greenwich Village. We are coming from No. Virginia.

We have yet to visit the suburbs of NYC (as this is where we would feel most comfortable). Can someone give me advice on favorite family towns that are close enough to the city? We are looking for a commute that is more direct & short on time. It seems (from the posts that I have read) that he will have to switch trains/buses for the most part.......

thx!

You might want to look in NJ or Long Island, because those trains and major transportation systems arrive on the West Side.

The Path train would be easiest as it stops at Christopher Street (in the heart of the village). However, the parts of Jersey that it services are not particularly suburban, certainly not by the standards of Virginia.

Otherwise, you'd want a town with commuter service into Penn Station and then transfer to the A, C, or E trains. It's not that far. The Village is not known for its offices so it's not the most direct commute, but it's not hard to get to if you're already on the westside.

Bayonne? It's not like NoVA, but it's pretty family friendly and offers a short commute. You'd take the Hudson Bergen Light Rail to the PATH, and be in the Village pretty quickly.

You're not going to find modern McMansion/stripmall suburbs within a short commute of the Village though. If you're looking for something like Northern Virgina you'll have to endure a long train ride on NJTransit or the LIRR.
