Washington Heights is predominately Dominicans and Black... I don't know how comfortable you will feel in that neighborhood all alone and it's not the best of neighborhood's especially during the summer when all the kids are running the streets even late at night making a lot of noise hanging out in front of the building

Inwood/Washington Heights covers a pretty large section of the city -- what area, specifically, are you considering? Some parts are terrific, others not so much .....

i'm not sure of the area specifically .. the rooms have been in different areas and it won't be a few months before i can move so i won't know exactly which part it will be until i'm ready ... but is there certain areas to just full on avoid? or is it kind of a block by block kind of thing?

White people live there. Your not alone in your lack of melanin.
There are about as many Black people there as White. But yeah it's overwhelmingly Hispanic (mainly Dominican).

Washington Heights overall is an alright area. It definitely has a latin feel to it. But I have seen plenty of white people there so you wont stand out. It looks rough in some areas but it is not even close to being a dangerous hood anymore. People will tell you too stay away, but IMO they are still thinking about how it was back in the 80s. It has come along way in the past 20 yrs.

I've often heard that west of Broadway and north of the GWB is better.

As a longtime resident of Washington Heights and married to a very white woman, this post is very true. There are a few blocks that are extremely noisy, but the neighborhood is not very dangerous. My wife and I love this neighborhood. I wouldn't commit to anything based on what's posted here (there are still a few rough blocksks, mostly more noisy than dangerous) but I would not rule out the neighborhood based on what's posted here either. The neighborhood actually ranks as one of Manhattans safest according to the crime stats, but you need to visit and see if you feel comfortable.
