I recently moved to NYC and have gone out quite a few times. Plenty of friends have visited already but they are from areas that have bars concentrated(more than 5 bars) in one area (Austin, Chicago, DC,etc). I didn't know if there were a concentrated area of bars that cater to older crowds that I could have taken them to. From my observations, this is what I think:

Lower east side: younger crowd, college and post-college young professionals and some swanky bars mixed in.
2nd Av UES, almost the same but crowd seemed a little more mature
Hoboken(I know its not NYC), young, immature frat-like mentality mixed in with old 50 year creepy guys, LOL. It reminds me of E. Sixth in Austin, I don't hate it though.
Mid-town-Not many bars, hip-hop bars scattered around.
Williamsburg-Never been during late night.
Meatpacking-Same, only have been for HH.

So, are there any recommendations of areas that have more than a few bars that cater to older than a 25 yr old crowd? I know there are tons of areas but I can't seem to find them. I also understand that many bars are scattered that are NOT in concentrated areas but we really like to bar hop in the same area as opposed to taking cabs/subways from bar to bar.

Thanks,

Nothing caters to an old crowd; it's all based on how much money you make and what kind of people you want to meet (who make a certain amount of money).

Real people of all ages - who want to enjoy "the scene" - may be found in the East Village: Otto's Shrunken Head, Mona's, Lakeside Lounge, Manitoba's, etc. All on Avenue B between 14th and Houston. Come on down!

The East Village (not the Lower East Side) has the most diverse selection on bars. There's something for every taste and persuation: jazz bars, gay bars, dive bars, swanky bars, hipster bars, scotch bars, hooka bars, tapas bars, wine bars, bars with live music, bars with a garden, pubs (Irish or English), and on and on and on.

You need to be more specific. "Older" is a vague term.

exactly, i'm well over 25 and i still enjoy meeting friends and going wherever as long as it is a chill loungy spot. most of my friends are over 30. and i'm usually able to detect a post-college crowd quick by the noise level and aggressive behavior.

for older people? hmmm, maybe hotel longes. i always see older folks at the bars at the Waldorf or Hilton

Thanks for the replies,

I'm in my late 20s but tend to like places with a range from mid 20s to mid 30s or so.
When you say East Village, do you mean just Ave B or are there any other main streets?

No, the whole of the East Village. I'm a scotch drinker so I like d.b.a. on First Ave. (d.b.a. | drinkgoodstuff.com).

Rue B is my local (Rue B Bars & clubs - Time Out New York). It's around the corner from my apartment and they have live jazz at night.

For gardens, your best options are on Avenue C (they just have more space over there).

Decibel is a fun sake bar (Sake Bar Decibel, New York).

The International is more of a dive bar, but it's fun (International Bar Bars & clubs - Time Out New York).

For hip and trendy try Death & Co. (Death + Company). Or PDT (:: Please Don't Tell ::).

The list is endless ...

The Brandy Library in Tribeca is cool (Brandy Library. Upscale lounge located in Tribeca featuring the largest selection of brown spirits in New York.).

It's not an everyday, hang out kind of place. You want to wear a blazer if not a suit. The crowd is 30 and 40 something and the brandy/cognac/scotch selection is astounding.

I think the shadow is a 25 and older spot. It's on West 28th Street between 7th and 8th avenue.
