Opinions on Boroughs
So I have been looking for an apartment for awhile now, my budget being 1500 for pretty much anything I can get, and a few different boroughs have been very prominent in my search. I've seen many studios and even a few 1-brs available in Clinton, the UES, and Murray Hill. And I have seen a few nice apartments (from studios to 2-brs) in Astoria, what are your opinons on these places? What is the best area to live in for a student who will be going to school in the Midtown area? Which will be the safest (I am a male, so that is a little bit more helpful)?

In Queens, Astoria, Rego Park, Forest Hills & Kew Gardens are all considered good neighborhoods.

Those places you listed are plenty safe, though my guess is that the UES listed there is one that's pretty much Spanish Harlem.

Alright, tahnks Chava61... I will check those places out. As for where on the UES, I don't know what street Spanish Harlem starts at but I do know that these listing were in between 69th and 84th... so wherever that is. Is that still safe????

Yes, it's fine.
Above about 97th Street, be careful on the East side.

All those areas are safe. If you want more space for your money Queens. As a student I am sure you are busy with classes and studying so you probably want to live in Murray Hill. It is very close to Midtown. That way you spend the least amount of time commuting. Your time is precious.

Yeah, I agree. I was thinking about living in Brooklyn or Queens and then after going from Queens into Manhattan one day when I was there, I figured living in Manhattan would be a lot quicker. And if I decide to live in Queens, I figured I would live on an outermost borough. But I am definately seeing a lot of rentals in Murray Hill and Clinton, so I'm leaning towards one of those areas.

Parts of Astoria are wonderful and other parts are not so great. Make sure you thoroughly check it out. I'm a female, and I wouldn't walk around Astoria at night...whereas the others I would.

Spanish Harlem begins at 96th street. You're best bet on a budget of 1500 would be Astoria, and if it is UES it would be a studio (if that) or someone might be listing a Spanish Harlem apartment (above 96 street) as the UES.

Okay. Awesome. Thanks. I have really only seen like 2 1-brs on the UES below 96th so far... but I'm willing to live in a studio if I'm going to be close to my school. It's just going to be me living there... so hopefully it won't be too much. Okay, there might be a dog with me too (if the apartment allows it) but that's it. Haha.
