I work for MTA...and I can tell you, there's really no way to know when they'll start calling off the Open Competitive list. But here's a positive note you might like to keep in mind:

There was a huge--I mean huge--hiring boom in the early 1980s. Many of the people hired then (in all titles) are at the point where they're thinking about retiring. MTA can play coy and say that only so many people are going to be called for, let's say, Train Operator. But the truth is that a large number of vacancies will be opening up within the next few years, and whoever's on the current list stands an excellent chance of being called. It's definitely going to happen; it's just a question of how soon.

Great info from this site. Thanks Fred & Mike. My list # is under 1900, from 8098, and I can't wait to be called. I'll be checking this site often to see if people are being called.

I know that the starting salary was $26.99 when I took the test in 2009. What is the current starting salary? (2012)

Also, anyone know how time in the NY State and Local Retirement system would convert in the TO retirement system?

Is it 20 years for full retirement, or more?

what if you have, say, 5 years in the nys and local retirement system. ( I worked for a local gov't for 5 years) I've been told that I still ahve to do the 25 years, but get a 30 year pension. Anythoughts?

and is it still $26.99/hr?

Has anyone from 8098 been called, or has the promo list been exhausted yet? Any updates would be appreciated.
