Agreed that alot of the crime comes from the projects.

whiteplains rd has isolated incidents of crime but it is no where near as hot as eden wald where they have break ins and robberies often.

Who cares? Both are in the north Bronx so both add to the crime rate.

Now in teh southern bx, you have much higher population densities with most of the residents being lower income/public housing and hence the increased likely hood of "stuff" to happen. I think you being more "comfortable" in the south bx probably has more to do with you being familiar with the area. Just like I'm familiar with the high bridge areas just north of yankee stadium, but supermario swears it is fallujah. -- oh well

Oh yeah, you're that guy who said Highbridge was nice LOL....all I can do is laugh. Not even going to waste my time.

What is a HUGE spike in crime? what 25% increase? 10%? I mean you hear a few stories here and there on news12 and then JUMP to a conclusion. Considering I live in the 47th pct area - I will be the one to tell you there is no HUGE SPIKE in crime around here.
|
25% increase is significant and 10% is alarming. Compare the stats from the last couple of years for each precinct, and tell me if it has not spiked.

Yes I def agree I am biased. Based on what I see, I believe that areas of the central Bronx, and North Bronx, will not improve the way, say the south Bronx will, because it is geographically less desireable AND the city/private investors are pouring huge amounts of money and laying their bets on a turn around/upside. I don't see that occuring in the central Bronx or Northern Bronx....am I wrong?

Looking to seriously make a move around Fordham U.

Hi there ALL!! Anyone know exactly what the safe, decent areas surrounding the Fordham University/Bronx Zoo/Botanical gardens area is?
I am seriously considering living around that school- & I was wondering how "tame" & "easy-going relaxed, safe, minimal to "0" worries about such random crazies or money grubbing opportunists or sexual predators-- is it for a woman (younger or older- but someone who goes about their business & WANTS to concentrate on school & light-skinned & petite [hopefully strolling down the avenues ***in PEACE & not looking over her shoulder every minute out of required paranoia] isn't hanging around to find trouble on the streets!!) HOW SAFE is it really or WHAT STREETS< AVENUES do U recommend to live on? Are there are any buildings with a building that has some sort of doorman, or security around there? [I have no visual or first hand understanding of the Bronx YET so....]
Was just curious if there was a little section around, close to Fordham U campus where it can be considered a little oasis of a safe & relaxed neighborhood where u don't have to ponder the frequency of random bullets passing through town or some sly bullet richocheting off of some building so an unsuspecting untargeted person gets hit, of course, by "gross & unnecessary tragic" accident!!!
[There was a story about a wonderful cute Black little boy who was only looking outside his window, 3rd Fl, & a stray bullet hit him, unintended? & he fell to the ground or died... That IS SOOO SAD & ridiculously NOT NECESSARY to have happened & makes me very upset to hear that such things can happen, just like that!! It reminds me of those childhood cartoon stories where the Indians just come over, & scalp off your non-Indian head for no damn good reason!
So, if anyone can recommend a good few streets/blocks or neighborhood close enough to Fordham U, but not in some crime nest of crazies, meanies or thoughtless creeps, Pls let me know!!!. Much appreciated.
Uhm, where do u see the "hipsters" moving in, BTW???
I really like the idea of going to Fordham U for a serious amount of time, but the only thing that is holding me back is the would-be growing nerves of "having to look over my shoulder 10x everytime I walk around the neighborhood outside of the secure campus" that would be somewhat psychologically too much of a burden--- coming from a relatively peaceful relaxed neighborhood of un-intimidating if not boring ppl...
It would be very ***distracting & disruptive to my general purpose in being there in the first place- to study/get alot of intensive work done & get good grades & concentrate on living life to the fullest//maybe exploring any unique neighborhood stores or interesting shops around during free time & frequently getting groceries or maybe going out to some decent LOCAL restaurant to have a bite to eat??// without feeling like a ***caged peacock/Tweety bird that's surrounded by wild-wild-west-type grizzly bears or a whole nest of Sylvesters the cat always on the prowl or leering at me like I'm on the dinner menu or something!!!
[yes, I've experienced that uncomfortable feeling of walking past a bunch of construction workers in another boro -- & that is supposedly a decent neighborhood so imagine a non-native being immersed/initiated into the central Bronx life?? Fordham U. is considered Central Bx or is it a part of the South bx? ]]
It's kinda sad when u think about how great the school really is, & then the "much talked about" surrounding elements would probably make a person think twice if not stagnate on their decision about coming over.....
Gotta see it THIS WAY::: timeline is not a simply a 1 week move, it would be a 2-4 yr commitment at least...so...HELP!!! What are the best options of where to live around there?
What about MacArthur Ave? I hear better things about it...
What if U want to be close to the train station? [Which stop/lines would it be? The MTA vs. the METRO
north? Is it OK to be around the train or to stay far away from that part of the neighborhood? How far is it to walk from that train station to the school itself ?
What is it like after 8pm or when it gets dark? Honestly, can anyone tell me-- that it would be OK, safe to walk around there at night for a woman or not really? Like until 11 or 12 or not really? Like what do u think is the CUT OFF time to get my ass indoors or out of the public streets ? Obviously this is not Williamsburg or the Village or even in front of Sylvia's restaurant at 125th St [Harlem] at night I guess!!!
Sorry if it's soo long but i thought this issue deserved a fair amount of words. Maybe others who might consider Fordham U, will find it helpful too! But I really like Fordham's programs so....if anyone can offer a good solution...
[Driving is not really an option at this time.]

I've gotten my car repaired many times Fordham Rd and Arthur Ave. the area seems very busy and i have never seen any trouble when i take a stroll waiting for the car to be fixed. of course this is during the day, I don't know how it is at night. I am sure there are decent pockets in the upper 180's in the area east of Webster Ave but I just don't know offhand where they are.
Close to the Fo campus is Bedford Park. In between the Concourse and Webster from Bedford Park blvd to Mosholu pkwy the area seems quiet and well taken care of for the most part. E 201 street around Bainbridge, Perry Avenue looks squeaky clean. if you aren't comfortable living in this section, you would not be happy living anywhere else in the Fordham area. You may want to look at bedford pk and see if you can rent an apt

Could u pls give me a few recommendations (a list perhaps or a website or an insider's look) at the area? Where to dine out at, where to go shopping for things like hardware stores, drug stores, & best place to grocery shop for fresh produce, & good bookstore/any coffee shop like Starbuck's or something similar where ppl can relax & meet up without someone hustling/harassing you for anything???
Just wondering which parts are the "wrong" places for a person who isn't familiar with the Bronx to wind up in, accidentally!! Could U also give me some zip codes, the exact location (cross streets) of the closest postal offices that are nearest to Fordham University & what little shops, eateries, specialty shops might be around there???
Much appreciated if U might wish to correspond directly sometime down the line--if U can offer more insight into the area... if you live around there or KNOW the BRONX from first hand experience, living there day in, day out..
I've heard alot of "not so great things" about the area.... Unfortunately,.,,reputation precedes the reality perhaps...or is it the other way around? ?
Any buildings there that are considered secure buildings? with doorman, security around, or having an extremely low rate/little to NO CHANCE of seedy activity? [NO DRUG seller activity, no turf battles???] Any possibility of types of ppl living around there=--= who might actually like watching PBS-Ch. 13 type programs? hahahah.. Your funny comment deserved a heads up recognition!! So What's your problem with PBS anywayz??? Don't you want to learn something other than watching shows that offer predictable violence, gratuitous shallow romances & small time fights & sensationalized mindless news? yes, that's what U get when you don't watch PBS, by the way...
I admit to being a sucker for some of that stuff but--- PBS rescues me back from my brains rusting away on all of those other shows!! except "HOUSE" of course. PBS actually is like a nice rich dessert-- quite expensive to have everyday [in almost every way if U think about how hard it is to develop these shows & keep them coming] if you really add up altogether the hours of programming & hard work they do to make it REAL, but I feel real damn lucky it's there for us all to tap into when we are ready for it!!!

Sorry I may have clicked at the wrong time. There is a little restaurant Pete's luncheonette on Fordham rd and Hoffman Street which is kind of homey. There used to be a Starbucks on Fordham and Kingsbridge rd in the early 90's but it closed. For the mega pharmacies like Rite Aide and Duane reade you may have to go to the wilder seedy sections on Fordham rd west of Webster Ave. For the smaller ones you may find them around Arthur Ave in the upper 180's
Basically, any stores(produce, hardware, pharmacies) you mention worth going into lie around the Arthur Ave district from Fordham rd south to about 185th/186th streets
The area that gives Fo a bad reputation is the area west of Webster Ave along Fordham rd and it's sidestreets, north and south of Fordham rd. Unless you are shopping for clothes, electronics or going to a mega pharmacy, that part of Fordham Rd is just crazy
the train station at Webster and Fordham is kind of like the dividing line between the good and bad. East of Webster you have Fordham Plaza and Fordham rd is pretty tranquil and quiet.
the Fordham PO zip is 10458. I don't know where the Fordham post office is though
there are stable buildings scattered throughout the upper 180's around Arthur and bedford park but otherwise it's pretty much downhill safety wise

Can anyone help me out with putting me in touch with someone who actually went to Fordham U. there for a few yrs & lives around there? Could u tell me what is the best part of that neighborhood to live in?
How far is Arthur Ave away (walking wise) from Fordham's campus?
Could u pls tell me where most of the projects/Gov't housing are located around the Fordham U. area- if there are any?? If U have any names of buildings or addresses so I could look them up -that would be helpful. Is it very dangerous to go near those places? [Esp. if U don't look like you're from the area & don't blend in well to that type of nabe!!]... ==
-==What do U guys think about the Eastchester area, near Castle Hill, Zerega Ave? Newboldt Ave...side? IS that a nice, safer area? (How far away is it from the Fordham U. school?) I hear there's a growing Indian population there???
Can I ask which part of the Bronx is the best part- where it is safe, calm, & no crazy activity?
I hear Riverdale is-- anything closer to Fordham U. though?
How far a drive is Riverdale from the Fordham U. areas?? Are there any DIRECT buses cross town that go from Riverdale to Fordham U.?>
Is Throgg's Neck, Pelham Pkway just as nice as Riverdale?
Some ppl on here seem to say that Norwood & Bedford Park is going down,
could u tell me exactly which streets, blocks are in rapid decline w/an influx of bad, poorer, seedy developments? I don't want to "accidentally arrive" on a street with brazenly open drug activity/selling.... Ppl can do all sorts of strange, immoral, reprehensible disgusting stuff behind closed doors-- but as long as it doesn't spill out onto the public streets & innocent lives aren't used
as pawns or bartering chips- it can be tolerable I guess---
When ppl have no shame, no remorse or embarassment or sense of discretion or sense of dignity about the dirty activities they are dealing in or value an innocent life itself--- -- those are the ppl you gotta avoid at all costs, I was told [by the council of WISE MEN, hehehe!].... Am I right???

**You may be getting too specific needing to know which blocks are good vs bad. The Bronx is many pockets of good then bad. You don't really need to hear it from someone who went to the University. It's common knowledge. It depends on your tolerance for "bad". the Castle hill/Zerega has pockets of good and bad and you can transfer buses to get to Fordham which is about 3-4 miles away. Arm yourself with a subway and bus map so you know where you are going. look at places to live and see how the areas feel. bedford park and norwood are declining but as i say that section of bedford Pk(201 street) I mentioned before is the best in the area. Throgs neck Morris pk and pelham Pkwy are different from Riverdale but just about as safe. Riverdale has the 9 bus that stops right outside the University. other than Riverdale, Woodlawn morris Pk, T'neck, Pelham bay, 201 street in BP and the small area around Arthur Ave in the upper 180's you may not be happy and perceive the other areas as bad. You have to experience it for yourself via looking

I would agree on the pockets thing. You really have to get to know the area you plan on moving in. If you feel comfortable go ahead if not look elsewhere.
