Why spend $1000 a month on a tiny room when you can get a studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn just across the river? You would be able to have fun and use your polish because it is a great mix of polish and younger people.

Yeah terrible, I don't know how people cram into tiny apartments in Manhattan and are willing to pay outrageous amounts of money for it when they can pay less and have twice the room in their own studio, just 10 minutes outside of the city. I just want to be able to walk around, relax and breathe a sigh of relief when I get home, not live in a shoe box.

Good luck!

I lived in spacious rooms with roommates in nice areas of Manhattan (midtown east, west, and uws) along with Williamsburg (for a month) all for 1000 and under. Almost took a room in the financial district for a thousand, glad I didn't. It's definitely doable. I've seen 750 on craigslist for a room in Hell's Kitchen. Who knows how small it was, but it's not hard to find a room for under 1k in a good area. Anyway, I'm not the most experienced in finances because I'm college age and not completely on my own, so I can't give much advice to the OP on his salary of 40k.
