Elmhurst, Queens
So, my g/f got a tip about Elmhurst, Queens. So I have a few questions
1. Affordibility- What is the general range for a 2 bedroom apt here?
2. Subways- I have read that this is one of the most subway serviced areas in Queens. Is that so?
3. Safety- Is this safe? I dont mean "NYC" safe, I mean, if Im coming from SE Virginia, would I be safe walking around later at night with my g/f?
4. Distance to Manhattan- In practice, how long does it generally take to get to Manhattan, financial district, by train from the area?

It depends where in Elmhurst... this is a pretty broad question. There's different services depending on your area. Generally takes about 20 minutes to midtown and 45 minutes to get to the financial district. It's a mainly Hispanic & Asian neighborhood. I don't really get what you mean by NYC safe or Virginia safe... safe is safe, no matter where you are. I'm sure some people would consider it a shady area, but I've grown up in this area, and I can say that most of this is pretty much just stupid generalizations about Hispanics and lower middle class people in general. I can't tell you the exact price range for an apartment, but be assured, it would definitely be cheaper than the majority of other areas you could move to in NYC.

Thank you for your response.
I mean "NYC safe" in so much as certain things New Yorkers simply ignore, while they would probably cause people from other areas in the country to stay locked in their apartment. I mean, are there drug deals on corners? Gangs hanging out and walking down the streets? Arguments? Gun shots? Prostitutes?
I have no problem with Hispanics (my girlfriend is actually Dominican), or Asians, however I could have a problem if they didnt except me (caucasian) or us together. My view of NYC is that its generally accepting of everything, which is one major appeal for us because you hardly get that in the south. I also have no problems with lower middle class incomes, because Ive been sitting in that boat most of my life as well.

I grew up in Elmhurst, yes it is safe in most parts. The closer you get to Roosevelt Avenue the grittier it gets. South of Woodside Avenue,Broadway and Queens Blvd are the nicer parts. Elmhurst is a very densely populated neighborhood.
The only hookers that I know of are on Queens Blvd near the motels,74th St going eastward. Even though you will be the minority in the neighborhood being caucasian, you shouldn't be afraid. Stay away from Corona though which borders Elmhurst.

Elmhurst is fairly safe, but has some shady sections at night. The more shady sections of the neighborhood are near Corona [Junction Blvd] or Roosevelt Avenue. The neighborhood is very convient, you have the malls on Queens Blvd, many stores on Queens Blvd and Broadway, many train lines, and many bus lines going through. It is a VERY heavily foreign area, with many Hispanic and Asian immigrants, alongside a sizable White population near Maspeth/Middle Village. English is uncommon to hear on the side streets of the neighborhood. It is a very easy commute to Manhattan, and I would image it being one of the cheaper [if not, the cheapest] neighborhood that Queens Boulevard runs through. Neighborhoods zip code is 11373.

And it is also very convenient if you have a car, very close to the Long Island Expwy, BQE, Grand Central Pkwy. As for parking, it gets harder as you get closer to the major commercial strips, Roosevelt Ave, Junction Blvd, Broadway.
The white flight from Elmhurst began in the 1980's, from the 2000 census Elmhurst was about 33% caucasian. I would say today it is no more then 20% caucasian.

Queens Blvd. has some of the best subway service and the commute to Manhattan is relatively short by NYC standards.
Most of NYC is relatively safe. NYC is statistically the safest big city in the USA.

I wouldn't recommend driving a car around Elmhurst. Traffic and Parking in the neighborhood is horrible. Thankfully, there's plenty of options to choose from via public transportation.

Agree. Parking is IMPOSSIBLE unless you have a driveway. You can really spend hours trying to find a spot.. even one that's not remotely close to your home, and you won't find it.

I saw a flier on a light pole this morning that said community meeting with the police(110th precinct)on Tuesday at 7:00pm at a parking lot on the corner of 76th St/43rd Ave. In capital letters on the top it said "Drugs and Prostitution."
That location is between Roosevelt Ave and Queens Blvd, most of the prostitutes are trannies and they must use those motels on Queens Blvd. I am not going to deny that there is a problem in Elmhurst, but it isn't as bad as it was in the late 80's. You really can't put the blame on the motels since prostitution can take place anywhere in the darkness of night.
