They are actually having a grand opening special now, because they renovated. You get two free burgers and two cocktails for $189 a night.
Just have to make the reservation by 8/15.
It's the Affinia Shelburne
303 Lexington Avenue,
New York, NY 10016 Tel: 212.689.5200
No affiliation people. Just found it online, booked it and had a great stay.
Best,
Ellen

Thanks for all the suggestions! Seriously, you guys don't know how helpful sharing your opinions can be. I haven't been to NYC since 2000 and I can't remember where exactly in Manhattan I stayed. May be we'll look into Midtown East area, plus I need to look into the Soho suggestion someone made.

What about Washington Square Hotel in Greenwich Village? They're very reasonably priced and you're:
1. Downtown where a lot of the action is but central enough to easily get to Midtown
2. Right across the street from Washington Square Park and near NYU's campus
3. Around some great restaraunts
4. Close to a number of different subway lines to help you get all around the city

I recently stayed at the Walcott Hotel on 31st and 5th. Think the cost for a twin room en-suite was $150. I found it clean, tidy and very comfortable for the money. The best thing though was the location. You can walk to many of the subway lines in just a couple of minutes. The closest is Herald Sq at 32/34th Street and from there you can get express trains to many parts of the city (inc outer boroughs).
The area seemed very safe, and not really bang in the middle of the mid town crowds. I like to walk through Times Sq every now and again, but i wouldn't want to stay in a hotel there!

I found a spot at the Doubletree Metropolitan (on 51st and Lex) a few months ago through Priceline for $105 a night, and the 6 train is right there too! It's quiet and clean, and not too close to the action, but close enough for a walk. It may cost more this time of year, but its worth checking out, and see if they do the price chop to lower the cost.
