Now that I think about it...about one million out of 4.5-5 million voters actually voted. The "typical" turnout for a mayoral election here in the city has hovered around one third for the last couple of elections. If 33% of the voters had turned out this time, it could well have given the election to Thompson. One fifth of the voters voting...I don't like to think such things about my fellow New Yorkers, but this city is about to get what it deserves. Maybe we should just cancel future mayoral elections, give Bloomberg what he really wants, and crown him king.
> I didn't think of Thompson's campaign as "incompetent." But I did think it was much more low-key than necessary.
No, he was incompetent. He should know New Yorkers love a strong personality, and he had every opportunity to define himself because no one in town know him beforehand. The Bloomberg campaign was embarrassingly successful with a strategy of pushing inevitability so the Democratic establishment, minority communities wouldn't bother to rally around Thompson.... and Thompson didn't resist! He almost played into it, cowering in the corner like a wounded dog and almost encouraging all the inevitability talk to get some sympathy.
He played the term limit card right, because it ultimately was effective but he did nothing to prove he was his own man.
The New York Times was almost making stuff up in the weeks before election to fill space about Thompson. I was looking for more info on the guy and couldn't find it.
The Times article about the amateurishness of his campaign was embarrassing - if he can't run a basic campaign with some professionalism, how can he run an 8 million person city?
He really blew it. Av average campaign would have won it.
Very true crescent...he couldn't run a simple campaign..how can he run this city..it was totally embarassing
