Default moving to NYC or Brooklyn, safe neighborhoods?

Hi, my friend and I just graduated college and plan on moving to either somewhere in Manhattan or Brooklyn. We don't have much money and are in the process of finding jobs still. Any suggestions on a relatively safe and affordable neighborhood to live in for two females? I know this is sort of an impossible request, but I don't know the area at all. I've heard Willamsburg is nice. How are Bushwick and Harlem like around Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd and 122nd St.? Thanks!

The southern half of Brooklyn is a lot more affordable than anywhere around the brownstone belt. Look for names such as Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Gravesend, Midwood, Kensington, Marine Park, Bath Beach. Even a lot of Sunset Park is much nicer than it used to be.

Brooklyn in general is more affordable than Manhattan. There are some pricey areas in Brooklyn, Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights are not affordable IMO. Try looking into the neighborhoods Fred mentioned in South Brooklyn. They are all the more safer areas of NYC and have some affordable housing. They are not what would be considered artsy, trendy, or hip neighborhoods (so if that is what you are looking for these neighborhoods will disappoint you) but they are solid middle class neighborhoods that are family friendly and safe.
