The family might not do it if the flight isn't free. Plus the money spent on the flight is a lot less than the money the city spends per person in the shelter.

Cuba? Did you mean PR?

Well if I was homeless and had somewhere better to go, I'd go for the deal, but I wouldn't take it like they're doing me a favor. I'd probably want work, not a plane ticket.

How is this shady? You don't understand how poor some people really are, there are a lot of people who can't afford a plane ticket, not even for their family.

Now, I think people are taking this the wrong way. It seems like a lot of homeless people are TRAPPED in NYC, and might want to get out, but don't have the money to do so.. now they can! No one is telling them that they HAVE to take this option, so I don't know why everyone is taking this offensively. Don't you want more options for yourself?

Who is taking this offensively? Some of us are just saying it doesn't seem like the best way to go about it and IMO, I do feel there's a subtle hint of wanting to upgrade the city even more. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's just my intuition.

Well, a lot of people have said that it's a way to kick them out.. that sounds pretty offensive to me. It's not like this is the ONLY option, it's just one option.

so what is a better option then? paying every night to keep them in a building that has to be maintained to some type of livable standard until they find an apartment? furthermore, if somebody in my family was homeless right now across the country, i would be cutting it very close to be able to afford to fly them here to stay with me.

The shelter system still exists, and it's at full capacity. Giving a few hundred people out of thousands and thousands of homeless the option of leaving to another place with a paid for flight is fine by me. Some people would really be helped greatly by leaving NYC.

This is a good extra option for a homeless person but at the same time I think it's a lazy solution geared towards the priviledged interest, like not having poor black guys on the sidewalk downtown. Clearly Bloomberg wants to cleanse Manhattan of the lower class.

i don't think this solution is geared for the typical homeless person you see on the street. It just gives off that impression because that's what we think about when we hear "homeless".

i think its more geared for the homeless family. the ones who have relatives out of state, but may not have the financial means to get them out. its the ones who live in the shelter on a daily basis, not the streets. they may not look all that different from me and you. they aren't on the streets begging for money. just need a break.
