Default Moving to SI from Brooklyn

Hi all,

My husband and I have been married for two years and are seriously considering moving to Staten Island in the coming months. We currently live in a rented apartment in Dyker Heights and are tired of paying a high rent without owning anything. Home prices are still very high here in Brooklyn and for what we can afford here, we can get double the space in Staten Island. We're very interested in Prince's Bay and I was just wondering if anyone who lives there or in neighboring communities could give me their opinion of the area and SI as a whole. I'm concerned about the commute to the city as both myself and my husband will be using the Express buses...how long does it take more or less to reach the city? Finally, living in Bklyn we've heard it all concering the air quality in SI, and although I don't believe most of the things I've heard over the years I was hoping someone could shed some light on the matter. I know Fresh Kills has been closed for years and I recently read an article on the borough president's website saying that a plan has been approved to clean up Brookfield. I guess I'm really concerned because we're planning to start a family soon and I want to make sure we're the making the right choice for the future by moving. Thanks in advance for all your help!

PRINCES BAY is an excellent area to live. You have the SIRT to take you to the Ferry ramp, which in 20 minutes will take you there, plus an additional 20 minutes to arrive to the Battery Park area. Not counting waiting time. There are many areas where you can park and ride, on S.I. Since I do not know where you work, I can only speak for the Wall Street area. There are also myriad of EXPRESS buses into all parts of the city, but that will take you longer.

A multitude of people use the park and ride into Manhattan each day as well as, the buses and trains. WELCOME!!!!!

Princes Bay is far from NYC. Do not live anywhere near the dump. Even though it is closed, it can still be smelled.
I would stay in Dyker. Much better.

Hi there. I am very familiar with Dyker Heights, I used to work in the intermidate school there. I love the area and would move there in a second if I could afford it. I grew up in Queens and live in Staten Island nor far from Princes Bay. The areas on the South Shore look gorgeous but there is a HUGE prescription drug problem here amongst the youth and many of the parent/ adults. It's bad. Also, I don't know of you are looking into a townhouse development (Captains Quarters?) but if you are, neighbors fight over everthing. I lived in one for 10 yrs. Now I live on a gorgeous street, tree lined, private semi detached and detached homes for the last four yrs. Neighbors all keep to themselves, drug dealers all over. No joke. There have been nine homicides on SI this yr alone. I also can tell you your commute to the city willbe long and exhausting. Expensive if you take the express bus. I will be more than happy to answer any questions you have as best as I can. Feel free to PM me. Best of luck to you!
