Baychester, Bronx on NY 1
As the recent threads here indicate, there's been some pretty good press about the Bronx lately. Today on New York 1 they had a segment on the Baychester (Northeast?) section of the Bronx, where they are building a lot of multifamily houses despite the economy/real estate situation.
I also have seen some new developments that look very nice in other sections of the borough, which of course is in addition to the existing prewar buildings in such areas as Grand Concourse and Pelham.
I've heard from a few people that Baychester is very nice, quiet, etc. Any thoughts?

northeast bronx always had a rep for not being a good area....its not on the level of the concourse, south bronx, morrisania or soundview though. the valley (area around haffen park) is probably the worst part of northeast, and any public housing in the area has a high crime rate (edenwald, boston secor, eastchester gardens, schiefflein, baychester). but the area is mostly 1-2 family homes....

Most of Baychester is what most people would consider fairly nice.A little too suburban for me personally but mostly brick single and 2 family houses with driveways, back yards and lots of trees.Looks like most of queens. The Southern part of the neighborhood ,down toward Pelham Parkway is very, very nice with perfectly charming little 600,000 and 700,000 houses.
Yes,parts of it might be considered drab and yes some parts are worse than others.I think the projects mentioned are actually in Laconia,Edenwald and Eastchester, which are different though nearby( to the north) neighborhoods.
And although there are parts of the Northeast Bronx that are not great, it covers a huge area and the Northeast Bronx also includes Pelham Gardens,Morris Park,Pelham Bay,Country Club,Throg's Neck , Pelham Parkway and City Island. Parts of these neighborhoods are as good as or better than a lot of(or most of) Riverdale and have always been considered among the best in the borough. So as always, you can't say things like "the northeast Bronx has always had a rep for not being a good area."It is way too simplistic.... and inaccurate.

very true bluedog, but usually (at least in my experience) when one spoke of the northeast bronx, areas like throgs neck, morris park, country club etc. were not intended to be lumped in with areas such as baychester, wakefield, williamsbridge, co-op city, gun hill, and eastchester. usually whenever i heard somebody say "i'm from northeast," the latter areas were which to he/she were referring. but thats in my experience, therefore my views are subjective. just didnt want to come off as ignorant with knowing the the actual areas northeast encompassess.

I know what you mean, seventh, but it seems that in most peoples minds the North/South Bronx is delineated by The Cross Bronx Expressway and the East/West Bronx is delineated by The Bronx River Parkway. If you believe that(and I'm not sure I do) then anything East of the Bronx River Parkway and North of The Cross Bronx Expressway is the northeast Bronx.A huge chunk of real estate.Otherwise,I agree with you.
Maybe there should be a central Bronx with an East and a West for everything between The Cross Bronx and and Bedford Park Blvd( West) and Allerton Ave( East) ?

tho i live in Riverdale
I've worked in the NE bronx (WP Rd and 238th street) area for 18 years and know the area very well. While my work nabe is declining, it seems to get better when you cross Baychester Ave. That section between Nereid and 233 street from Baychester to Seton Ave(ie. De Reimer, Wilder, Murdock, Monticello) looks nice but I don't know if that's considered Baychester or Wakefield. Some nice houses over there. Who lived there decades ago, was it a lot of italians?

That's what I mean. It is considered Baychester after you cross Baychester Ave.And yes ,it was and still is a predominantly Italian area. And it is very, very different from White Plains Road and 238 st.
