I really wonder; Does NYC have beaches? Sandy beaches where you could swim?
I know that Manhattan does not have it, but where in NYC are the beaches? I'm not talking about Long Island or Jersey shore.
Staten Island, one of the 5 boroughs that encomprises NYC, has Gateway Park, Midland Beach, South Beach, and all have lifeguards. Come on over, we will leave the light on for you.........
I was so surprised to find out that NYC had beaches when I moved here because it's not really advertised. Which I don't understand because it seems like that would just be one more attraction for visitors - big sandy beaches in in a great city like New York? What more could you ask for!
But to the OP, I prefer the beaches in Queens since they face the ocean. But this summer (when it's not rainning) I've gone to Jones in LI. I used to go to Riis but I find that the commute time to Jones is not that much more.

Am I the only one that likes Long Beach more than Jones?
The only thing that sucks about NYC beaches is how much garbage is lying around. You need to be careful not to step on glass or anything else.. that's really my only complaint. The sand and the water is usually cleaner elsewhere... aka Long Island, but it doesn't bother me as much as the possibility of scratching my foot on glass, so I usually wear sandals until I claim my spot. Just a warning.
Good information here. Which beaches are the easiest to get to by public transportation alone (short walk from subway station)? Also, do they have facilities for changing clothing and showering before/after swimming? Locker rooms or places to store valuables (perhaps asking too much)?
I think NYC beaches aren't advertised because they just really aren't as nice as other beaches in the country (think Florida, California, even NJ shore)... and that's from a girl who grew up taking trains & buses to local beaches. There are much more interesting this to do in NYC as a tourist....unless you are from the Midwest & haven't seen the ocean before...in that case, it's great!
As for valuables: don't take valuables to the beach...common sense...of course, they can be stolen. Even my $10 sunglasses have been stolen (in LI) in 2 minutes. My friend's shoes were stolen. Just take a few bills, & a metrocard & maybe a credit card. No expensive anything....even clothes.
