Ideas for an affordable hotel in or around Manhattan
My girlfriend & I are planning a trip to New York for Labor Day weekend and we're looking for an affordable hotel in or close to the Manhattan area (we're kind of on a budget). Any ideas for hotels in the vicinity or an area with easy access to subways that would take us directly to Manhattan would be appreciated.
Thanks again and see you in New York!

What is your budget like? That might help us determine what areas would be open to you.
Also, I would suggest using Priceline for the hotel. A friend of mine used it while visiting before and got a room at the Hudson Hotel by Columbus Circle for around $170/night - and I believe they are a 4-star hotel.

Affordable hotels
Hey, thanks for the reply! I'd like to stay in the price raneg of about $100-130 per night. Neighborhoods that are surrounding Manhattan are also something we 're looking into as well, but somewhere where we could get to a subway easily and go straight into Manhattan.

You can likely find something in Northern New Jersey on the PATH train to Penn Station and Lower Manhattan. You might also find something on a NJTransit route, bus or train, to Manhattan in that range as well. There's a Doubletree on the PATH in Jersey City, for example.

I just did a search via priceline and got a quote of $131/night for labor day weekend at the Ramada Eastside 161 Lexington Ave. Manhattan. If I were you, I'd search the internet sites like priceline and get 6 or 7 hotels in the price range ,then I'd call the hotels directly and see if I could get a better rate. There's no reason to pay more than $160/night or so.

I stayed at the Holland Motor Lodge right by the Lincoln Tunnel in Jersey City before. It's about $110 I think, it might be less. The Path train is in walking distance and will get you into Manhattan pretty quickly.

Search for bidding for travel on google. The first website tells you how to successfully bid on priceline. I usually stay in Grand Central Hyatt or Times Square Hilton for 120-140 per night using priceline.

I believe there is now an actual option in your price range in Manhattan itself. There's a relatively new growing chain called "America's Best Value Inn". It's more of a "co-op" than a chain, I learned of it when I was temporarily living in the Hartford, CT area for a temporary assignment from early June until last week and had some issues with the sublet I was renting and found they had efficiencies that were competitive with sublets.
They just opened one in Manhattan and I had looked for curiousity (I live in southern Westchester so I wouldn't need to find Manhattan lodging and was just curious) and it was about $120 a night for the random dates I put in. They also have a motel near Newark Airport that is much cheaper.
Go to www.abvi.com and check it out (their Manhattan option is the former Mayor Hotel on 79 Division Street, but you can get info direction from the chain's website, this link will take you directly to the hotel itself: http://www.americasbestvalueinn.com/bestv.cfm?idp=1571). Good luck!
