My fiance and I are moving uptown from Hell's Kitchen to cut our rent. We're moving to 144th and Riverside. I don't know much about the area, and would love honest details (how safe, good restaurants, grocery stores, activites nearby, what to be aware of, etc.).
I got extremely heckled today, every guy had something to say...I stick out a bit since I am white and blonde. Any recommendations regarding this? I'll probably be getting a stun gun and pepper spray to be safe .
I used to live not far from there. I don't need data or to know someone living in an area to know that that area is dangerous. It's a sixth sense developed over the half century plus that I've lived in NYC.

Thank you!
Riverside is very nice. You are right by Riverbank state park as well. That's prime real estate in that particular area. Apartments are not as easy to get on Riverside. Some of the side streets between Riverside and Broadway can be a little rough but you should quickly learn which ones to avoid. I don't see why you should have any issues. Hamilton Heights has its problems but the area on Riverside is almost another world, really.
You might have been hyper-aware or a bit more nervous than usual. People (knuckleheads and jerks I should say) feed off that. If you walk like your from there and you know your way around people don't bother you. I know this because I lived in that area and still visit frequently. Also there are other White people over there. There are quite a few on Riverside. These days it's really quite common and not strange to see White people in that neighborhood.
Also I wanted to add that the area is in transition. A lot of the businesses are changing but the area still lacks in a lot of services and shopping.
I will say that you have to have a bit of a tough skin or be confident that you will quickly adapt and gain the necessary street smarts if your going to move over there. If your easily intimidated you might want to re-think the move because the area is still in transition.

I agee with the post above by NooYowker81, I am from area too, and I still frequent the area, I have family there. I am also woman, and you will have to gain confidence very quickly walking through that area. That is a common everyday occurance. As you get to know people and they see you more frequently, you will start to get friendly hellos, not heckling. If they see you with your fiance a lot, they won't bother you when you are alone after awhile, they will know you are a couple.

think for a second, why would you move to a neighborhood you feel uncomfortable in? if you are that concerned about saving money on rent, maybe it's time to move OUT of new york city
i live at 151st and riverside, and what you see is what you get.
Riverside and Convent are the nicest streets in that area. So if a person feels uncomfortable in either, they are certainly not going to feel comfortable in the general area.
